About Me

I'm a wanderer soul with a passion for people-watching and a knack for untangling urban rhythms and stories. More often than not, you can find me hoping on and off my bike, hiding behind my oversized sunglasses or scrolling endlessly reading about random topics in a corner.

I consider myself quite open-minded and an open-book :) for better or for worse I wear my heart on my sleeve… and likewise I appreciate it when people can be honest and are not scared to be themselves around me. I really enjoy long deep conversations, I’m curious and patient enough to delve into new topics, but also passionate enough to always have something to say about what really interests me.

I love ice skating, crime documentaries, pop culture, railway history (and train spotting!) as well as architecture and urban sociology and design. My newest goal is learning how to surf, but I also enjoy bouldering, climbing and roller-skating. It’s always cool to meet up someone over one of these activities, but I would never say no to a good bite and a drink!

I grew up (mostly) in the city of mountains in northern Mexico, so I love a good hike and a bbq, although I try to keep my meat consumption to a minimum nowadays.

I've had the pleasure of living in four different countries (and two Mexican states) so far and had unique and unforgettable experiences in each. I've now made a little comfortable nest in Amsterdam, but the desire to go out and explore is still there and I am always looking for ways to explore more remote corners of our beautiful planet.

Next trips:

27-30 October 2024: I will be out of the country due to a family situation and can offer my place in Amsterdam to whoever’s in need if we can work it out :)

9-20 November 2024: Quick trip to North America. I will spend a few days in Chicago, Boston and Monterrey! Really looking forward to this, Hope I can meet up with some locals and try some world famous delicacies (I’m thinking of you deep dish pizza!) and call me a nerd but I’m just really looking forward to riding the L! Day trip to Salem is also on my bucket list (since I was a child). Unfortunately I can’t take my skates with me, but would love to find some open air ice rinks to have some fun with nice views. Anyone wanna join?

Locals and hosts in these cities: any tips or suggestions are most welcome, as is your hospitality if you can host me :)
Surfers: I’d be happy to have you at mine while I’m gone, just shoot me a message and hopefully we’ll figure it out. Please only send a request f your stay would be within these dates, as unfortunately I am not flexible this time.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

Because I think that going somewhere and NOT meeting locals and seeing their way of life is like eating only some of the food on your plate, or not finishing a book...
I also hope to meet cool and like minded people to learn from and find new inspiration and hope in the world. Let's share some laughs and smiles over a coffee, glass of wine, or over a really nice walk.
When I'n Amsterdam, hit me up and we can hang out. I'd love to show you the city or the coast! Unfortunately, I live in a really small studio apartment, so I can only take emergency requests if you don't mind sleeping on an air mattress on the floor. If I am away on holiday, if we can work out how to do the key hangover, you guys can Couchsurfing at mine while I'm gone.

Interests

My interest in food, politics and urbanism are perhaps better reflected in my desire to go to new places. I like seeing how other cultures organise life and the world around them and how they shape it in the way they deem best. As a sociologist, I am always people watching and find enormous entertainment in putting the little pieces of this puzzled world together. I love topics related to human behaviour, deviancies, politics, (breaking) social systems and norms (...especially if we can find a way to remain deep yet lighthearted and humourous) as much as I love talking about films, food and a healthy dose of pop reference fuelled talks. The world can be a big place, and the more we learn about it, the scarier it gets, but there's beauty in that too.. I think we can learn from everything and everyone and I am always thankful for people that introduce me to new topics, ways of thinking and inspire me to pursue new goals.

Music, Movies, and Books

Filling this in is actually harder than it looks..
Movies: The Words. Spirited Away. Camino, The Butterfly Effect, Magnolia, everything everywhere all at once. I’ve kind of just forgotten every single movie I’ve ever watched, letterboxd coming in the near future!
Fave Childhood Books: When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit. Ruby Red. St. Lucys Home for Girls Raised by Wolves. Harry Potter Series. We Were Liars. Not without my daughter.
Fave books now: unfortunately mostly read uni stuff but I am recently trying to go through Joan Didions, Haruki Murakami and Kazuo Ishiguro.
Music: House and Techno for a night out. I guess I've been in The Netherlands for too long... General: No Doubt, Tatu. Placebo, Panic at the Disco, Green Day, Fleetwood Mac. To listen in my down time: Lana del Rey, Vanessa Carlton, Regina Spektor, Nelly Furtado, The Hush Sound...It really depends on my mood, but I can listen to pretty much everything, except screamo.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

-Share my school lunches with black bears on a regular basis.
-Petted and held an alligator in a lagoon in the Yucatan Peninsula.
-Went to survival camp as a child in the desert of Coahuila and caught a snake and roasted it in foil under the sun... but didn't dare eat it!
-Said 'feck it' and held hands with a man in public in Moscow.
-Ventured into the streets of Cape Town's informal settlements and talked to locals.
-Tried dried crickets and other insects in Central Mexico.
-Won a gold medal in an interstate taekwondo competition.
-Organised several reforestation events and trash picker-uppers.
-Booked a spontaneous trip to Tokyo to celebrate new years with my best friend.
-Left my home at 17 y/o to travel around Europe, worked and lived in different countries, always moving around and experiencing new things, just me, my backpack and a dream. 10 years later, I'm still here.

Teach, Learn, Share

I think most of what we teach each and learn from each other is often subconscious. We can't always put our finger on it, but everyone leaves a little part of them behind with us.

What I Can Share with Hosts

We could put a fire on on the laptop and have a make-do campfire talk, or just share some nice playlists. I would also love to cook some traditional Mexican food for you, or help you prepare something from your country, then share a nice talk over dinner.

At the same time, I'm always ready to hit the town, whether that's for a beer or a coffee, I just wanna walk around, sit down, observe, absorb it all in! and repeat.. maybe you can show me around? In return... I always research random things about public transport, infrastructure and architecture before going to a new city.. and I may not remember the important bits, but will happily share with you lots of random, possibly interesting, and sometimes semi-funny facts about your city, with a bit of luck, maybe something you didn't know already... and of course I always love to learn more from locals, as there's only so much that you can find on the internet. A place is nothing but the stories people tell about it.

I consider myself a very open-minded, laid-back and easy going person, I will respect your ways and your home, and all I want in return is a good time and good memories from my time away :)

If I’m travelling to a new city, I naturally want to hit the touristy places and do some sightseeing, plus some of your favourite spots in the city, but I also understand that as a local you may have seen it all a million times, so I’m also happy to be sent off my way! now if I’m visitting somewhere I’ve been to before, this is when it often gets super cool! As then I like to venture off the beaten path ;)
