About Me

Hey, I'm Lucy! An engineer from New Zealand who has always had a desire to travel and explore the world - so here I am! I'm travelling by land - bus, train, hitchhike - from the top of North America (Alaska, Canada, contiguous USA, Mexico and Belize so far) to the bottom of South America. I'm trying to move slowly and sustainably through as many varied places as possible, stay outside my comfort zone, and learn new things along the way.

I am open-minded, considerate, sociable and independent with a quirky sense of humour. Laughter every day keeps the doctor away in my opinion!

I love to learn first-hand about the culture, history, and daily life of each place I go to, and meet people I may never have had the chance of meeting back home. Human connection is really important to me, even if it's a smile to a passer-by, or a brief conversation at the bus station.

I enjoy being outdoors, wandering around cities, exploring wilderness areas, hiking, biking, reading, good food, art, and most of all making new friends and having fun!

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

To connect with friendly locals and experience places that aren't usually typical destinations, while also keeping costs down on my long voyage.

Music, Movies, and Books

I will read anything and everything that has words - Harry Potter, sci-fi, adventure, popular fiction, classics, memoirs, and everything in between. I recently read Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance and I loved how much it made me think.

As my friends all know, I am a huge Star Wars fan. When I get the chance to watch a movie, I enjoy comedies, drama, thrillers, blockbusters, indie and foreign films.

There is a running theme here - my music taste is also wide-ranging, and I like specific artists from almost every genre (except death metal, but maybe there's a band out there that'll be the exception). Current faves are TEEKS, FLETCHER, Janelle Monáe, and Kacey Musgraves.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I went on an Alaskan road trip where a friend and I car camped in the Arctic circle, watching the sun hover along the horizon between sunset and sunrise. We also saw a moose charge down a grizzly bear that was stalking her newborn calf!
There have been many highlights but that is a stand-out for sure.

Teach, Learn, Share

Coming from distant islands on the opposite side of the Pacific ocean, I would love to share info about my culture, history and geography. (I can also provide advice and connections for anyone who wants to travel to NZ.)

I am always hungry to learn something new! From practical skills and crafts, cooking/enjoying local cuisine, fun facts about a place, or even a few words of a new language.

What I Can Share with Hosts

Stories, jokes and laughter.
I like cooking shared meals if you entrust me with your kitchen!
Technical skills, practical hands and a problem-solving mind if needed.
I'm always up for a conversation with someone new about something new.
