About Me

Hi! My name's Luis but most people call me Luigi.

I've completed my university studies, becoming a certified English/Spanish translator and I love everything language-related. I haven't really traveled a lot, but I enjoy chatting with people from other places and cultures and exchanging ideas. I've also been told I have a great sense of humor and I enjoy a good comedy or listening to stand-up artists.

I'm also into music. I've been playing the bass guitar for over 10 years now and I don't think I'll ever want to stop. If you play any instrument and there's a bass around, let's jam! I'm mostly into rock n' roll but my taste also branches into funk, jazz, blues and I guess pretty much anythin else with a groovy bassline. I really love that classic 70s and 80s classic rock n' roll sound!

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I'm traveling to New Zealand for a year soon and I'd like to have some locals show me around and providing a helping hand for a few days while I get used to the place and set up shop. We can always have a round of mate and just chat about anything and everything!

TBH, a friend who had some wonderful experiences using Couchsurfing in NZ recommended it. I immediately felt a bit dumb about not figuring it out sooner myself.

Music, Movies, and Books

I'm not much of a book reader, though I absolutely love Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels.

As for movies, I enjoy a bit of everything, speacially comedies. Back to the Future is an all-time-favourite of mine. I'm currently watching Rick and Morty and Better Call Saul and a couple of others which elude my mind ATM.

Music... that's where it's at. As I mentioned, I'm a bass player and I like jamming with people. There's always something you can learn from fellow musicians. Some of the bands I like include: Iron Maiden, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Diamond Head, Foo Fighters, Soundgarden, Peal Jam, Living Colour, Jamiroquai, Molotov, RATM, Red Hot Chili Peppers, the Offspring, Green Day and bassists like Anthony Jackson and Marcus Miller.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

It's hard to think of something, but I'd say helping start an "experimental music band". It's difficult to define, but any amount of 3 to 8 people gathers and plays in pubs, sometimes in parks, sometimes at a friend's house. Because we don't know how many people (or WHICH people) it'll be, we just have to improvise with whatever instruments we happen to have. So maybe there's a drummer, guitarist and bassist... or maybe there's also two djembes and a saxophone. Sometimes a harmonica. We don't really know, but we improvise and we always have a wonderful time, specially after a beer or two.

Teach, Learn, Share

Being a translator, I can't help feeling as if I'm standing in between English and Spanish. I can always help someone learn Spanish or even English if need be. I'd also love to learn about different varieties of Spanish and English from fellow travelers or hosts.

In a way, the same goes for my bass playing. Maybe I could share a bass lick or two and, at the same time, gain new perspectives on music by playing alongside new instruments and, most importantly, new people.

What I Can Share with Hosts

I like helping people out and feeling useful. I also think I could chat about anything. Want to talk about history? Count me in. Culture? Yup. Current international affairs? Sure thing (after you let me google for 5 minutes, at least) The expansion of the universe and what may be beyond? Sure, why not?

We could have all these conversations over some mate, a traditional drink in my country which is shared and also an excuse for socializing. Think of it as a bitter, hand-held tea.
