About Me

In march 2022 I dropped out of college to travel the world without any plan or whatsoever. And after 5 months of saving up a little money, my adventure started in september 2022.
I mainly get around by hitchhiking and sailing. I’m trying to go around the world without flying because in my eyes that just the best way to do it. Seeing the landscapes, the faces and cultures slowly fading into another seems so fascinating to me.
Before I was traveling, I went to film school in the Netherlands, Doing camera work, editing and directing and pretty much everything from writing the script up until the final edit. Sound amazing, which it really is. But I couldn’t do the school thing anymore, so I decided to do what I REALLY wanted.
Now I’m traveling around the world in a very nomadic way all by myself. I go very slow, do a little bit of work here and there and really just go where I feel like going.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

Obviously like any other surfer I’m partially here for the free accommodation, I’m not going to lie about that. But besides that; Couchsurfing allows me to meet SO many new people everywhere I go. And because I’m traveling alone it’s amazing to have a platform that allows me to meet likeminded people wherever I am.
I’m very interested in cultures, food, music, languages etc. so I’m all about exchanging our different ways of living. I love to teach and get taught new things.

Music, Movies, and Books

Man, I don’t know where to start on this one. I’m a big nerd when it comes to music and movies, books not so much. I try my best, but I just don’t have to concentration for it :( .

MUSIC
Wherever I am, whatever I’m doing, there’s always music playing. And besides listening to music I’m also very interested in how certain song came to be and what they mean. Some of my favorite artists and bands are: Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Luke Winslow-King, Dire Straits, Manu Chao, Paul Simon, Jimmy Buffet, J.J. Cale, Bob Marley, AC/DC, David Bowie, Bruce Springsteen, Buena Vista Social Club. And man, there are so many more. You can visit my Spotify profile for more details. Username: Luka Roerdink.

MOVIES
My favorite movies are: Lord of the Rings trilogy, Into the Wild, Interstellar, Forrest Gump, Star Wars ep I to VI, Inception, The Revenant, Shutter Island, The Princess Bride. Not as big of a nerd with movies as I am with music, but I’m always in for a good film (Not in the cinemas though, not a fan of the cinemas).

BOOKS
I’m very good at starting in new books but I barely make it to the end of those books. The only books I’ve read all the way through are: No One Here Gets out Alive (Biography of Jim Morrison) – Jerry Hopkins, Around The World on 50 Bucks – Christopher Schacht, Ocean Nomad – Suzanne van der Veeken.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

2019 - HITCHIKING IN MAURITIUS
Back when I was 16 years old I went on my first “big” vacation outside of Europe, to Mauritius. Where I hitchhiked for the first time ever. After drinking rum, eating freshly caught fish and drinking coconut water (which was not as good as I expected it to be) on the beach with some locals. I went on a little hike to a waterfall nearby (what was my original plan until I ran into those guys that invited me to drink some with them). Only after about 45 minutes it got very steep and slippery and wearing flipflops and having drunk quite some rum I decided to head back to our hotel. But when I got to the road, I thought why not just hitchhike my way back? So that’s what I did. Not very sure whether to actually do it or not I stuck out my thumb and the first car that passed stopped. I still have no clue what language he spoke, but I told him the name of the hotel, got in his white fan, and after 10 minutes he dropped me off right in front of my hotel.
I had the greatest Experience ever, but my parents weren’t very amused when I told them about it.
