One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
Visiting the cliff caves in Matala, Crete. They're right on the beach, so you can swim out to some of them, and the others look out over the sea.
The caves were dug in the Neolithic era (literally by cavemen) where they were used as homes. The Romans used them as tombs, and you can still see the shapes of the tombs inside. Eventually they were abandoned, until the 60s when wandering hippies started a commune living in them. Janis Joplin, Bob Dylan, Cat Stevens, and (of course) Joni Mitchell all spent time in the caves before the hippies were driven out in the early 70s. Now, you can't stay in the caves, but you can visit, and just feel the beautiful, ancient atmosphere of the place.
