About Me

Just a free radical hurtling through space, crashing as gracefully as possible from one city to the next.

Arizona -> Alaska!

Okay, so I don't really "live" anywhere... Cordova, Alaska is the only place that I consistently return to, but then I only spend a few weeks in town before heading out on a Seine boat to commercially fish for salmon. I make my living by fishing, but my passion is theater, the arts, aaand travel. I fish for about 3-4 months out of the year, and then spend the rest of my time doing whatever the heck I want.

I'm open, genuine, straightforward, and ridiculously non judgemental. People describe me as confident, but the truth is that I am curious. My need to see what lies at the other side of the dark tunnel outweighs my extreme anxiety over the dark and the fear of getting stabbed... For lack of a better metaphor. I am curious about everyone and everything.

I bounce around every 3-6 months and I don't see that changing any time soon. Once I turned 18, I moved out and started exploring. I couldn't resist the urge to see and do as much as possible. Nomadic feet are hard to keep still.

My plans for the future are vague and that's kind of the lifestyle I've built for myself. Wherever this life takes me, I simply hope that I never grow tired of meeting new friends, learning new words, being inspired by people, and laughing often!

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

Travel is my passion and experiencing new cities and cultures from the eyes of the locals is the best way to travel. I think the most important thing in this life is to love a lot, be honest always, and make as many new friends as you can.

Music, Movies, and Books

Music:

Everything

Specifically? Ask me in person, and I'll let you follow me on Spotify.

Movies AND TV:

Thrillers that make you think and romantic comedies because they are good for the soul :P. Also, biopics, fantasy, and very specific sci-fi...

Captain Fantastic, A Little Bit of Heaven, The Office, Parks and Recreation, The BBCs Robin Hood, Downton Abbey,

Books:

I adore all books, but I recently read "Tuesdays With Morrie" and it kind of changed my life.

ALSO
Theater. I'm a performer. I sing, act, do improv and recreational standup, spoken word.. I want to get into silks and trapeze, maybe even burlesque! I love the arts and especially love connecting with other artists, performers, musicians, and people who appreciate artsy fartsy shhhhhtuff!

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

We were running to home port from the farthest point in Prince William Sound, it was like 3am, I had just climbed into my bunk after my wheel watch ended when my Captain called me up on deck. I was annoyed and pretended to be asleep, but he insisted "Lyssa, seriously, get up here. The northern lights are out!" I shot out of my bed like a bat out of hell. They were so breathtaking, I could have cried. The sky was drenched in wavering curtains of blue and green lights. The waters were flat calm and glassy and reflected the sky perfectly.. we were surrounded by a world of shimmering, gentle light. Far and away the most beautiful thing I've ever seen.

Teach, Learn, Share

What could I teach you?

Knitting, sewing, crochet, cooking, baking, singing, ukulele, Christian theology, American Sign Language, tips on traveling abroad (alone or with friends), basic car maintenance

What would I like to learn?

Whatever you'd like to teach me! I love learning new skills, hobbies, and facts! Let's spend a day in the kitchen sharing favorite recipes!

What sets your soul on fire? Share it with me! I love listening to people speak about things they are truly passionate over.

Share:
- A plethora of kooky (only slightly embellished) stories from my various life experiences: I've grown up with eleven siblings, watched an active volcano erupt, worked on a commercial fishing boat in Alaska, and many more crazy adventures.
-My sense of humor... it's usually pretty good.
- Good cooking and baking. You will eat like a God on Mt. Olympus with me in your kitchen

What I Can Share with Hosts

Good cooking, great company, and lots of laughter!

I believe in humans helping humans purely for the sake of supporting one another. We all have to live on the same planet, so why not? As a guest in your home, I will be clean, polite, respectful, and accepting. Don't be surprised if you catch me jumping in to do the dishes after meals or cleaning a living space after I occupy it... It's just the Alaskan way.
