Обо мне

CURRENT MISSION(S)

Be kind, thoughtful, and open-minded.
Get my Ph.D.
Become more active and try more new things.

ABOUT ME

I'm a pretty down-to-earth person, interested in community and sustainable living. I am a non-smoker, non-drinker. I live with Mark Huntress in Chapel Hill, NC, who also is a couch surfer. I am easily excited and like playing games. I enjoy cooking, baking, reading, keeping chickens, and gardening. I also love watching movies, but I'm trying to focus more on my other interests lately.

PHILOSOPHY

I try to live with the assumption that everyone is doing their best in their particular situation. This philosophy has made me a lot of good friends and has opened up a ton of opportunities. I also believe that living a sustainable lifestyle is highly important. My ultimate goal is to integrate community and sustainability, and to live the best life I can.

Что привело меня на Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I have hosted a couple of couchsurfers through roommates, but most of my activity has been surfing. I hope to become a more active host now that I live in a house that is more amenable to doing that. I believe that couchsurfing is a great way to meet people and travel on the cheap! I love that Couchsurfing fosters community. It's actually very interesting to me how Airbnb is growing, while most people still don't know about couchsurfing. I think it speaks to how our culture is migrating more toward an economy-based sharing system as opposed to a community-based sharing system. Disclaimer: my partner and I DO host on Airbnb, but we give preference to couchsurfers for the reasoning above. COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I've couchsurfed and hosted several times now. I've never had a bad experience thanks to the great people on this site, and I have been blown away by the friendliness and wonderful hosting I have experienced.

I really want to go back to France someday. I went on a high school trip, and it was fantastic but busy and a little too touristy. I hope to take a trip there with Mark someday and have a more relaxed and authentic experience.

Интересы

Curiosity keeps me going. I love learning new things, especially things that I would never learn without the help of other people. Reading nonfiction is one of my favorite things to do.

I spend a lot of my time working and doing school stuff, but I enjoy knitting, cooking, watching a few TV shows, playing board games, and listening to podcasts. I also like looking at cute pictures of animals online (who doesn't?). Sometimes Mark and I get really into Texas Hold 'Em. I love hanging with my two cats and taking care of our chickens and garden. Hiking is fun, and I want to do more camping and swimming in the future.

Музыка, кино и книги

I love movies and books!!! I enjoy going to the movie theater when there is a big exciting new movie out that everyone wants to watch, even when it's not a very good movie. I remember very distinctly the moment when an entire movie theater got up and chanted "Dumbledore! Dumbledore!" during a big scene in one of the Harry Potter movies- it was amazing and hilarious. I like that movies can take me to an entirely different world for a couple of hours, and they can get my mind off things. I recently watched Jurassic World, which was IMHO pretty bad, but I guess I get into the hype of movies and enjoy them even if they aren't aesthetically pleasing...! Oh, my favorite best worst movie of all time is Troll 2. The Room is also pretty good. If you haven't heard of either of these, I urge you to drop what you are doing and at least wikipedia them.

That being said, I can get pretty wrapped up in good books. Usually I like to read nonfiction. I really enjoyed Thomas Hager's "The Alchemy of Air" and Tina Cassidy's "Birth: The Surprising History of How We Are Born". Ooh, ooh, and Allie Brosh's "Hyperbole and a Half" blog and book. I like to collect children's books too. I'm in the middle of reading a book on the Nobel prizes. I just finished The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks and Bad Paper: Chasing Debt from Wall Street to the Underworld.

Классная вещь, которую я сделал(-а)

Hmm, I don't often think of myself doing amazing things, but rather, experiencing them. I enjoy the simple things in life, especially good food and good company.

Last summer, I went to Grandfather Mountain with family and got to the top of a peak. We got to see clouds rolling over the mountain, which is something I'd never seen before. I was really impressed and hope to go back again soon.

I also recently came up with my own idea for a scientific research project that I think is novel, interesting, and do-able. Being creative and realistic in science is much harder than I had anticipated, so coming up with my own research project idea that I intend to pursue is really meaningful to me personally.

Учу, учусь, делюсь опытом и информацией

I can knit a little bit! I know how to make vegan peanut butter chocolate chip oatmeal cookies and vegan garlic bread. I can teach people about chickens and I know a lot about biochemistry. My partner and I often share knowledge and experiences we've gained in the realm of couchsurfing, raising chickens, living in Ohio and North Carolina, and gardening.

Чем я могу поделиться с хостами

We have a big tea collection and I try to bring tea to hosts as well as food or beer when possible. I can share stories of what it's like to be a graduate student. And of course, if there is anything I can share that guests can think of, I would be happy to do so!
