About Me

Moi!

I'm Maj, originally from Finnish Lapland, and currently living in Barcelona, Spain. As a Finn, I'm always (always) up for coffee or a drink and, in a little less Finnish way (sorry for the stereotype!), eager to get to know people from everywhere!

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

As a language freak, I'm looking forward to meeting new people from everywhere, during my trips abroad as well as in Barcelona. I believe the absolute best way of discovering a new country or a city is having a local show you around. I'm not really your average tourist, I prefer wandering around the city, discovering the little paths where tourists don't usually go, going to the movies (a little tradition I used to have) and seeing how the locals actually live, rather than queueing for hours to see a museum or a monument.

I don't have pretty much any sense of orientation and I'd probably be able to get lost in my own living room, but I'll be glad to show you guys around Barcelona (with a GPS, no worries) when I'll get to know the city a bit better, or to have you guide me when traveling. Besides, I have learnt from experience that getting lost is the best way of discovering a new place. So let's get lost together!

Music, Movies, and Books

I listen to pretty much everything, from rock to metal (living up to the stereotype) to rap to pop and r'n'b, and pretty much everything in between. I listen to music in all the languages I speak and learn, and I'm more likely to enjoy an Estonian rock band or an Azerbaijani rapper rather than the latest radio hits.

I'm not difficult with movies either. I'd be more likely to choose a comedy or a thriller, but many of my favorite movies are dramas (The Way Back? Into the Wild? Les Choristes?) I love movies with unexpected plot twists and can't stand movies that are so evident that you know exactly how they are going to end within the first 5 minutes. And, I love stand-up comedy (especially French) even though it can't really be classified under the title "movies".

I used to read a lot, and I'm trying to get back to reading a lot. I love thrillers, especially Nordic authors (Jo Nesbø, Lars Kepler, Stieg Larsson...). As for my movies, I also love novels with unexpected plot twists (Gone Girl? Big Picture?) I'm trying to get myself to read more classics.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

My two biggest adventures so far are all about leaving - first leaving my home country as a shy and introvert high school graduate to live in France for 9 months (that somehow extended to 8 years), and leaving everything behind in Paris to move to Barcelona almost 2 years ago.

Countries I’ve Visited
