One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

For two years, I lived on the Bay of Fundy in Nova Scotia. The highest tides in the world. When that surf started to roll in, it was magnificent.

I attended two long retreats with Vietnamese Zen teacher Thich Nhat Hanh. His presence was so pure, he just took you to a very different place within yourself - and the feeling in the (large) group got so sweet over the course of a week that you could almost touch it.

Three years ago, three male poets hosted a poetry evening that drew 75 people. My set closed out the evening. I was working with a brilliant guitarist, who played "acoustic guitar with effects" - he had a suitcase full of pedals to do different things with the sound. The audience totally showed up and I went into a zone where I and they together created something very magical. It left me with a vision for my work - how it could touch people, inspire, make a difference - that has never left me and in some ways has guided the last three years.
