About Me

CURRENT MISSION

To understand the world, and understand others, by understanding how others understand the world.....

We are a husband and Wife team, and both enjoy meeting people from overseas.

Me:
30 year old guy, from the South Island of NZ, easy-going, yet also motivated & sociable. People I know and work with consider me respectful and friendly.

Alissa:
28 year old Texas gal'. Enjoys reading, teaching swimming classes, history (especially royalty); And joining Malcolm when he goes on his wacky adventures. (see Interests)

2011 - 2012 I spent 16 months working as a sound and lighting tech on a Disney Cruise Lines ship based out of the US.
While there I met my (now) wife, Alissa, who was working as an entertainer for the kids and teenagers. She is originally from Texas, but now lives with here in Oamaru.

Prior to the ship, I spent 5 years working in my home town, part-time as a DJ & Sound contractor.

I still have an interest in Sound tech and DJ'ing, but lost my passion for the business side of it so now only do it sporadically and for fun.

PHILOSOPHY

Show love and respect for ALL others as you do for yourself. Be prepared to go the extra mile to help someone out, or let them know how important they are...

You never know how much of a positive effect that little compliment or act of kindness can have on their life.

I want to know that regardless of however long I’m here, that I have been a positive influence on some of those around me.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I've surfed and met for coffee with awesome CS'ers in the States. Showed travellers and CS'ers around my hometown, and hosted on a fairly regular basis while I had my own place. I have met some truly amazing people thru CS and learnt so much about life and myself from them.

Having hosted plenty of Couchsurfers before, I realise the commitment my hosts are making, and like to contribute to the household in some appropriate manner, groceries, cooking dinner, extra help with the housework etc.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I have hosted, and been hosted, and always had very positive experiences. Met some people who have really made me look at parts of life in entirely new ways, and whom I will never forget. I hope I may have had the same effect on others...

Interests

Kitesurfing / Power kites - The ones that like to drag you round.
I'm a beginner on the water, but have reasonable experience flying on land.
If the conditions are right, we could take you out to fly on a large field with an appropriate kite and teach you the basics. (Can supply helmet) You will have fun first time doing it!

Motorcycling. (VTR1000F) If you are touring NZ on your own road bike, I may consider joining / taking you for a short tour of some great local roads. I'm very safety conscious, and would expect you to have reasonable riding experience and full protective gear.

I enjoy almost all music, including some relatively alternative. Occasionally my life schedule allows me to get away to music festivals.

Dubstep
Drum 'n' Bass

Even opera occasionally.... Anything can go...

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I was bitten by a Zebra, in Mexico.....

Co-incidentally Alissa was taking a photo at the time and accidentally caught the exact moment on camera, we didn't realise this until weeks later. Happy to show you the photo sometime.

Teach, Learn, Share

I like to teach people new things and share/discuss ideas.
If you are interested to fly a power kite, I'll take you out for a play if the conditions are right.
I enjoy showing travellers some of the lesser known local spots such as Elephant Rocks

I often enjoy a meaningful, or philosophical discussion.

Alissa is very knowledgeable about all things history and loves to share what she can about USA and Texas also.
