Overview
About Me
I was born in NY, NY and lived in New Jersey and Memphis,TN before moving to Brooklyn ,NY. I enjoy the benefits of living in a metropolis (tons of restaurants, different cultures, always something to do) but, also love slower paced living. Getting away from life as I know it is an absolute necessity. I'm often described as a "free-spirit," which I think just means I don't fit any expectations. I enjoy dancing, live music, karaoke, museums (more modern) and deep conversations, especially those that promote understanding. I enjoy a good book and always choose outside seating in nice weather. I work for NYC's public transportation (subway system) company and spent my adoloscence out and about in Brooklyn, the Bronx and Manhattan.
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
I'm on couchsurfing to connect with people and help them navigate NYC. Also to meet people that might do the same for me when I'm in their town.
Interests
Poetry readings, Slam! open mics, and The Moth are events I try to attend regularly. I just started getting into salsa and bachata. I really enjoy dancing as an activity and an art form. I think live music is the best and enjoy seeing performances at smaller venues. I like bike riding but, will only do so in parks in NYC. It's a treat to be someplace where there isn't so much traffic and I can ride around town. A good book is quite enjoyable; I lean towards classics and reading list fare but, fantasy was my first love. I'm into comic book knowledge (I don't really read comic books though). I'm into health and being aware of what you're giving your body.
Music, Movies, and Books
I like anything I can dance to or cry to. Rock, pop, hip-hop, r&b, regaetton, freestyle, funk, blues, house, edm, hardcore, older country, some indie. I dance to salsa and bachata but, I won't just sit around listening to it.
I will read almost anything fiction. Loved the Wheel of Time series. Mists of Avalon was a fave when I was a teen. I think Siddhartha is my favorite (single) book; it used to be The Hunchback of Notre Dame but, it was too difficult (sad) for me to get through the second time around so I nixed it. The Neverending Story is a good movie but, a great book. Classics are classics for a reason, though I tend to stick to lighter fare. l especially enjoy George Elliott and Jane Austen, though I love East of Eden and The Grapes of Wrath
My favorite movies, in specific order: West Side Story, The Breakfast Club, Love Actually, Some Kind of Wonderful, and Stardust. Movies with car chases, explosions, snarky leads and choreographed fights are my heart. Indie, espionage, Spanish, Latin American, British, Scandinavian, Japanese, are all part of my preferred movie genres/types.
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
What is amazing? . . . The first thing that comes to mind, is going to Niagara Falls. Staring into the falls I understood the meaning of the word awesome (fearful and amazing), and though I've played in a hurricane and joyfully walked through multiple blizzards it was the first time I realized that nature is scary.
What I Can Share with Hosts
Great conversation! Including the benefits of rye whiskey, k-dramas, anime, yoga and the Alexander Technique. I can teach you how to spell your name in sign language if you don't already know and give a brief introduction to french.
