I believe that in order to learn/sense/feel the most in a place you visit you need to meet the locals, It's hands down the best way to grasp the culture of the place.
Couchsurfing is one of the best ways to do that.

In music, I hear a lot, from classic Rock the 60´70´ (Zeppelin, Floyd, Jethro Tull, Jimi Hendrix, Deep Purple, The Police, Bob Dylan, Dire Straits, Bruce Springtenn, Johnny Cash, The Cure, and so on.) Also U2, Nirvana, Eric Clapton, Blind Faith, Gnarls Barkley, Metallica, Guns&Roses, INXS, Leonard Cohen, Mike Oldfield, Nick Cave, Radiohead, Talking Heads, SOAD, The Rollings Stones, Beirut, The Strokes, The White Stripes
A little of Rap too with Macklemore, 50 cent, Eminem, Jay Z.
I really enjoy Classical music, not only Beethoven, Mussorgsky, Eric Satie, Tchaikovsky and Mozart too of course.
A little modern Daft Punk, Kid Cudi, Tiesto, Depeche Mode, MGMT, Moby, My morning Jacket.
Argentinian Music too. Los Redonditos, La Renga, Bersuit, Babasonicos, Soda Stereo, Charly Garcia, Mercedes Sosa, Los Autenticos Decadentes, Los Fabulosos Cadillacs.

Books, my currently favorite authors are Hermann Hesse and Kafka, I read Siddharta, Demian, and the Steppenwolf from the first; and The Castle (das Schloss) and "Letter to his Father" (Brief an der Vater) from the second.
