About Me

Currently surfing (without a couch --out at sea) in Carrapateira. Maybe I can host you, but maybe not -- sorry, temporary accommodation, things change...

Due to the covid19 pandemic, I am more picky than normally when it comes to accepting guests. I have to be relatively convinced that you are "clean" and I don't host anybody who is just looking for a free night without offering anything in return -- sorry about that

[If you are looking for accommodation please keep in mind that I live in Retamar, not in the city centre]

I grew up in Madrid, did my university studies in Paris and Lyon (France), my PhD in Oxford, worked in Tel Aviv, Groningen and Berlin, after which I moved back to Spain (Almeria), where I have lived for the last 17 years -- but will soon get on the move again, as I am quitting my job as a researcher to write and travel. I love sailing and hiking, reading, a good laugh and a glass of wine in the evening.

I spend most of the year abroad, so please forgive me if I am not at home at the time of your visit and can therefore not host you -- but I do my best to answer requests ASAP, and only delay answering if I have no internet connection -- which does happen...

I hope you enjoy your stay in Almeria.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

Viajar no es ver cosas, sino conocer personas.

Travelling is not about seeing things, but about meeting people.

Music, Movies, and Books

I like all sorts of music, but I most often listen to jazz, classical or flamenco.

My memory is so bad that I forget the films I watch and the books I read almost as soon as I put them aside... I don't watch enough films. I like them, but somehow I never find the time for it. Anyway, I could mention Fried green tomatoes, or Dersu Uzala, but these are just the first ones that come to my mind. With books it is even worse. I don't have such a thing as a favourite book. Each book is different, and there are too many of them I like., from the Iliad through El Quijote to Cien años de soledad, La peste or A Thousand Splendid Suns

Nunca he hecho eso. No creo que sea capaz.

I have cycled from Trondheim to Oslo along the fjords (till Bergen, then inland) on a heavy steel bike and with no rain gear (I was a student and had little money!) I have lived in the Amazon with rubber tappers (I was studying palm trees at the time) and studies birds (blue footed boobies) in a small island off the Pacific coast of Mexico, where we slept in hammocks and had water and food brought by ship every two weeks. I have studied penguins in Deception Island (South Shetland) and swam south of the antarctic polar circle. But don't be fooled: anyone can do that, it is just a matter of being in the right place, at the right time.

Something special is meeting somebody who has just lost what was most dear to him or her and comfort that person, manage to make him or her forget the grief and bring a smile to his/her face even if it is just for a couple of seconds. I have never done that. I don’t think I can.

Teach, Learn, Share

I am not sure that hosts are looking for a teacher... But, of course, I can share my knowledge about ecology and evolution with them! I personally want to learn about how life is in different places, and I love learning languages (even if I am not very good at it).

What I Can Share with Hosts

A Spanish meal, conversation, help with domestic duties.
