About Me

[EN] Hi there!
I'm Marc. I'm currently doing a Ph.D. at Oxford University. Before that I travelled through Latinamerica for 10 months and got into couchsurfing :-)

[ES] Hola!
Soy Marc.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

[EN] I want to meat people not just visit places. Places are created by the people who are living there - they are making a place alive and are filling it with soul. I am really interested in getting to know my guests/hosts and am happy for everything they want to share with me from their daily life. I believe I can learn something from everyone I meet and I love to philosofise about life, exchange ideas, share stories and have a laugh. I am happy if someone wants to show me around or introduce me to local customs. Vice versa I try to make my surfers feel at home and part of the local reality.

Music, Movies, and Books

[EN] I have no favourite genres when it comes to Music, Movies and Books - it's all quite random.
Depending on my mood I listen to all kind of genres. This can be Black Music, Reggae, or sometimes even chart music, some classics like the Stones, Bob Dylan, Neil Young Johnny Cash, some German artists (Seeed, Peter Fox) and sometimes also classical music - with the term classical I mean all epoques from barroque to romanticism (Arcangelo Corelli, Vivaldi, Bach, Händel, Beethoven(!!), Mozart).
Movie-wise I like the ones directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, especially "Babel", but also "Amores Perros" and "21 gramos". I also like "Batman, The Dark Knight" and "Into the Wild".
With regard to books and writing in general, here is a mix of my favourites and my current universe:
Herman Hesse ("Stufen","Steppenwolf"," Siddharta"), Bertolt Brecht, Walter Bergengruen, Günther Grass (only "The Tin Drum"), Patrick Süßkind, Daniel Kehlmann, Wolfgang Herrndorf ("Tschick"), Ingeborg Bachmann, Paulo Coelho ("Veronika decides to die").
I am currently addicted to reading "Gone Girl" by Gillian Flynn!

Además me gusta, "El Caballero de la Noche" y" Into the Wild" ("Hacia rutas salvajes").

Herman Hesse ("Stufen", "Steppenwolf"," Siddharta"), Bertolt Brecht, Walter Bergengruen, Günther Grass (solo "El tambor de hojalata"), Patrick Süßkind, Daniel Kehlmann, Wolfgang Herrndorf ("Tschick"), Ingeborg Bachmann, Paulo Coelho ("Verónika decide morir").
"Gone Girl" de Gillian Flynn es adictivo.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

[EN] Travelling through Latin America for 10 months - without an itinery just bought the plane tickets. It's difficult to put this experience in words.

Before I felt like Humboldt in Daniel Kehlmann's novel "Measuring the world" when he is talking to Georg Forster who travelled the world with James Cook:
"He wanted to travel as well, said Humboldt.
Foster nodded. Many wanted that. And everyone regreted it afterwards.
Why?
Because one can never come back."

And it's true: Travelling changes who you are forever. But it also enriches you in many ways. Amyr Klink found apposite words for this:
" A man needs to travel. On his own, not through histories, images, books or TV. He needs to travel for himself, with his own eyes and his own feet, to understand what is his. So that he might someday plant his own trees and value them. He must know cold in order to enjoy the heat. And vice versa. He must experience distance and homelessness in order to feel at home under his own roof. A man needs to travel to places he does not know; he must lose the arrogance that causes him to see the world as he imagines it, rather than simply as it is, or as it can be; the arrogance that turns us into professors and doctors of what we have not seen, when we should be students who simply go and see." ("Endless sea")

("Mar sin fin")

Teach, Learn, Share

[EN] Teaching you German (but I think life is too short to learn German...) but I could teach you juggling in only 2 days ;-).
I am passionate about natural sciences and mathematics: I have studied chemistry, mathematics and physics in Oxford, Bonn, Barcelona and Bochum - anything you wanna know? - Ask me ;-) I am also happy to provide advise about studying in Europe.

What I Can Share with Hosts

[EN] I am always eager to get to know the person/s I am staying with. I can share stories from my travels or tell you something about Germany. If you have a piano, I can play some songs for you. I also think the kitchen is a great place for intercultural exchange. For example, I can cook great German "Schnitzel" according to my mum's recipe or I could bake a cake for you. I think I am also fun company for a nightout.
