About Me

Hey!

I am a very open-minded person, and I am in a great long-term relationship. I am kind, relaxed and easygoing. I was born and raised in South Africa (which is a great country!) and I am addicted to travel. Meeting new people and learning about our differences is something that gives me great pleasure.

I studied at the Potchefstroom Campus of the North-West University in South Africa. I completed my Bachelors degree in Botany, Zoology and tourism in 2008, followed by my honnours, Masters and PhD in Tourism Management. Currently I am a lecturer at the same university.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

The most important aspect for me is getting to know people from different countries for a stronger cultural experience.

The second reason:
As a result of my lecturing position, I need to travel quite a lot to take part in international projects as well as tourism conferences. However, I sometimes also want to experience places to which my job does not provide opportunities. The problem with being South African is that our currency is very weak against other currencies, meaning that basic items cost about three times as much as it would cost in my own country. For this reason I would like to make use of Couchsurfing in order to be able to travel to places I've always wanted to see.

Interests

My interests include anything that I find intriguing at a specific moment in time. Some that I can think of now include:
-Travel & experiences
-People & Cultures
-Food (Cheese, wine & beer are my favourites)
-Music
-History
-Human social development
-Politics and economics (news)

Music, Movies, and Books

I can listen to any good-sounding music; my taste in music is really diverse. I am really bad at actually remembering the bands or songs' names, so I always need to sing a part of the song if I want someone to know what I'm talking about.

When it comes to movies, I prefer 'smart' movies that make you think about life such as "Best Exotic Marigold Hotel", "Salmon Fishing in the Yemen", "Life of Pie", "The Kite Runner", "The Help", "12 Years a Slave". Furthermore, I like adventure and fantasy movies.

I never read story books as I am already tired from reading too many things as part of my job.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

It is very difficult to single something out. One thing that I did find quite amazing was to stand at the top of Mount Fuji in Japan. It might not be that amazing to someone else, but it changed me somehow.

Teach, Learn, Share

I am not sure about this one. I will only know what I can contribute once I meet other people. =P

What I Can Share with Hosts

I can keep my host company with drinks (preferably red wine) and interesting conversations.
