About Me

I'm an engineer living in London - at the moment I work three days a week as a software engineer on IP networks, I also enjoy working on renewable energy systems. I'm very interested in self-sufficiency and working with recycled/scrap materials, which comes in handy because my girlfriend, Rowena, and I live on a narrowboat (a traditional UK canal boat), which we are making into a home. While we do it up we aren't able to host couchsurfers, but we hope that once we're finished we can return the many wonderful hosting experiences we've had on our travels!

Over the past few months I have been working as an engineer on the Volvo Ocean Race yachts meaning I get to travel to some pretty great places. In May the boats stop in Newport, Rhode Island, so afterwards Rowena will come meet me and we will have a three week trip starting in New York and then around New England. It's our first time in the US so we're pretty excited to see everything!

I like to be outdoors in nature and love long walks. If I don't get a good walk every 2 or 3 days I go a bit crazy. I play violin (mostly classical and Irish folk) and love to share music as best I can (I am quite new to jamming but enjoy trying, unfortunately we wont have our instruments with us for this trip!).

I enjoy quiet nights but also love live music and EDM. I think I am: friendly, curious, silly.

Rowena is a biologist (working at Kew Gardens in London and starting her PhD in September) and is similarly interested in nature and the environment. She is: passionate, a good cook, a fan of cats and also an artist who uses watercolour with ink. Her profile is: https://www.couchsurfing.com/people/rowenahill

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

Couchsurfing is great because you meet local people and can share with them. I feel that the people you meet and the connections you make are one of the most important things when travelling. You can avoid the tourist traps and see the city from the perspective of the locals. I want to explore the world, share ideas with people that I would not normally meet and who come from different backgrounds.
