About Me

CURRENT MISSION

To complete grad school with my sanity intact

ABOUT ME

hmmm. i'm a student at the moment, and probably will be for another few years. i really love to cook. i love to travel. i'm currently learning yoruba, a west african language - ni ede Yoruba oruko mi ni Titilayo. i generally move once every 1-2 years, i'm a nomad at heart. oh yeah, and i can make my own marshmallows.

PHILOSOPHY

try something new every day, talk to people even if they appear to have nothing in common with me, give everyone a chance.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

i tell everyone i know about couchsurfing!

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I've officially couchsurfed four times, and met amazing people when i did. i always knew there were people like me out there, but kinda forgot it once i got into the corporate world. i'm out of that world now and back into the world of anthropologists, travelers and free thinkers. cs is an organized way to do what i've done in the past - i can actually plan my trips now rather than hoping to meet someone cool along the way.

Interests

Traveling and cooking are two of my favorite things. I joined the Compact in March of 2006, a group that has vowed not to purchase anything new during the year. i'm not compacting anymore but still try not to drink the capitalist koolaid. Yoga, whenever i make the time... I'm equally comfortable drinking cosmos with the girls or putting back some beers with the guys. Anthropology of course, and Benin, West Africa in particular. Grad school has cramped my reading style lately, but I still love a good book on a rainy day.

Music, Movies, and Books

anything by Tom Robbins, my favorite book of all time is The Agony and The Ecstasy, Ayn Rand is amazing although i don't always agree with her philosophy. two favorite movies are Moulin Rouge and Charade. musical tastes range from Beth Orton to Panjabi MC to Afrobeat.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

climbed mt kilimanjaro in 2001, watched my niece grow up and become her own person, actually felt like i made a difference giving a lecture on media stereotypes about African countries to a class of 200 college sophomores

Teach, Learn, Share

I can cook. Some people say I can cook really well. The best advice I can give is to keep tasting along the way, and don't assume that if you've made it before it will turn out the same the next time. It never will, but that's ok!
