About Me

ABOUT ME

It would seem like I was born to be a farmer: i'm most comfortable scratching the earth, living simply, thinking plenty, and wearing overalls. But having settled in a cold northern city for the past two years i learned to adapt to an urban setting. Now I'm just a bit confused at what's next.
I do know I'm into discovering the less gentrified parts of city, and i'll always enjoy farms, farmdogs and farmcats.

I like to learn from life/other people, i'm less enthused by structured educational institutions, but i have gained from one such institution a bizarre love of the arcane field of semiotics. I like to travel, but in slow ways that let you absorb it. I prefer trains and bikes to planes and cars. I am learning how to use a set of watercolors, a guitar, a notebook to delight myself but before that i have long relied on kitchens, yards, landscapes, schools and libraries to absorb myself. oh and people of course.

PHILOSOPHY

Liberation through love, education and resistance.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

So new, so so new to this. I guess I'll soon find out.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

very little so far. but i've been a house guest to many, and a good one, i think; i'm tidy, i'll help you cook any meal, and i can keep to myself if you're really busy.
i've also wwoofed many a time and sheltered a few weary travelers so couchsurfing already feels like a familiar thing.

Interests

food! i like to do more than simply feed myself: cooking, baking, growing, eating, fermenting, experimenting, dumpstering, scavenging, restaurant-ing, dining, butchering, slaughtering, sharing!!!
I've been very into fermentation of late, especially kombucha (if you want a mother i always have too many microbial mouths to feed!).
I also eat meat but I'll respect the food choices/practices/culture of your household. And i'm keen to talk food, farm, animal with anyone.

Plants in all forms and flowerings. i especially like learning the culinary purposes and uses of wild plants. i'm also a fan/advocate/appreciator of the practice of growing edible plants.

Education of myself and education as a practice. I believe in life-long education, free education and in our ability to educate ourselves. Critical questions are the start and end point.

Urban (and rural) exploration. Going where i'm not supposed to, often for the sake of satisfying my curiosity.

Music, Movies, and Books

reading too many books at once. I always find works by bell hooks easy to finish. I like reading Paulo Freire on education. i really like Harold McGee's On Food and Cooking for answering any question imaginable on food. I also like Sandor Ellix Katz's books on food and fermentation. I like books that reveal the alternative histories that media always fails to represent; on that note i've been reading about the Black Panthers recently. Zines are an awesome source and resource for challenging ideas and hard-to-come-by information.

I don't watch a lot of films but I know what I like. The quirky and whimsical I usually like. I enjoy the world's created in the films of Jean-Pierre Jeunet. I appreciate Almodovar's films. I like the animation done by Priit Parn, Heiki Ernits, and Janno Poldma. I've recently seen and liked Sweetgrass, Winter's Bone, Pan's Labyrinth, All About My Mother, Slam and Micmacs.

Aesop Rock, Circus Contraption, Mt. Erie and Julie Doiron's Lost Wisdom, Blackbird Raum, Strand of Oaks, Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, Nathaniel Rateliff, Willy Mason, G. love, Brett Nelson/Ah Sage, Neil Young, Jordan O'Jordan and the sounds, songs and strums of my friends
