One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Helping rural poor girls to stay in school during menstruation by providing them sanitary pads to use and constructing wash and change rooms at schools and equipping them with skills to make local reusable sanitary padswhich has enabled them to have their menstruation with confidence, respect and dignity and this has reduced menstrual hygiene related absenteeism and the high school dropout rates and improved performance as compared to boys and increased retention of girls in schools which has reduced early marriages. But due to financial constraints, we are not able to provide materials to use and we have managed to reach 8 primary schools. Being able to break the silence and taboos surrounding menstruation as it was a taboo topic that is never discussed in public and menstrual blood was viewed as unclean and harmful. For many girls in kasese district and Uganda in particular, there is a monthly prison that time of the month where girls regret being born women because they cannot afford the basic needs. It is a form of poverty that deprive girls of education because they have to miss school for 1-5 days monthly. Unable to afford proper menstrual products, many schoolgirls have no choice but to rely on crude, improvised materials to absorb their menstrual flow. They use rags and scraps of old clothes, to wads of toilet paper or newspaper ,mud, leaves etc– materials which are neither effective nor comfortable. Faced with frequent, embarrassing leaks and a susceptibility to recurrent infections, this situation reduces most girls’ experiences of menstruation to a monthly dose of discomfort and shame. The absence of clean water for washing, private changing rooms and sanitary materials in schools has aggravated the problem. It’s imperative for women and girls to have access to the necessary knowledge, facilities and cultural environment that will allow them to manage menstruation hygienically and with their dignity intact.

Teach, Learn, Share

I grew up partly with my grand mother and after with my father single handedly in a very poor background where there was no school fees, one meal aday, living in agrass thatched house and at night sleeping on a pile of grass with nothing to cover myself, no clothes including knickers and during my menstruation, I could use soil, leaves etc. Above all we were living happily and comfortable with our situation. I got married early because the man promised to pay my school fees. I still remember my grand mother who gave me constant love and one important gift in life ‘BELIEF’
