About Me
Hi everyone! I’m Marjorie Wu. I grew up in Shanghai until I was 16, then moved to the U.S., where I completed my high school and college education.
I began traveling more extensively in 2021, starting in a small village in Yunnan, China. There, I met an architect friend from New Zealand who had studied in Norway. She was working on renovating a traditional house using recycled wood she found at the local market. Spending time with her made me reflect deeply on my own lifestyle, which I realized was quite consumeristic. I also noticed how disconnected I was from hands-on creation and self-sufficiency. That experience sparked a deeper reflection on the capitalist society I had been living in and a desire to live more intentionally—outside of "the matrix," so to speak.
From that seed, I went to Australia for work exchange. There I went hiking and doing wwoofing at various places really solidifies my environmental consciousness. I began to more and more drawn into the question: how can I feel how the plants and animals? How can I be seen in a way of a more non-human centric view? Through my time in the wilderness, I began to truly belief of seeing the world in a deep ecology mindset and became increasingly interested in indigenous cultures and wisdom. I’ve also drawn a lot of values that Schumacher College in Devon, UK holds.
These days, I’m learning through hands-on experience—working on various farms and volunteering with environmental groups as part of my journey.
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
I have heard of couchsurfing for a while now, but I have never tried it. I was reading a travel memoir of a girl who has been traveled 70 countries using couchsurfing host, and I am very intrigued by different hosts she has met along the way.
I am taking my time to travel so that I can deepen myself and would love to meet people from various background.
I find I am done with the commercial way of traveling, and am interested in traveling to get to know the locals and why they chose the city they are living in. I am more interested in the stories of each person, and I would rather enjoy this way of almost a present economy (exchange values without money).

Music, Movies, and Books
Favorite Music: Recently, I’ve been very drawn to Jon Henrik Fjällgren, and his song Daniel’s Joik has been on repeat for me. I love that there are no words, yet it still moves me deeply and brings me into a heart-centered space. I also enjoy listening to a lot of medicine songs—music that carries the energy of nature and helps me feel more connected to it.
