About Me

CURRENT MISSION

To be immortal. Yep. So far, so good.

ABOUT ME

You know the start of Trainspotting where Renton (Ewan
McGregor) says, "I didn't choose life. I chose something else?" Like
him I chose something else. This does not mean I frequent a heroin
den in Leith. Rather, I chose something besides "go to school, get a
job, get married, buy a house with a white picket fence, start a
family, retire to Florida, and then a few kind words said at your
graveside." I veered off that well trodden path yonks ago, choosing to
forgo the easy way out. Instead, I've been hacking through the
underbrush of life finding my own way, brambles and all.

I didn't choose life. I chose ... being a scientist.

I chose staying in the lab at 3am debugging ancient C++ code. I chose wrangling broken LaTeX against looming submission deadlines. I chose quaffing the Nth crappy cup of instant coffee. I chose rendering obscure plots in R for a paper only a handful will ever read.

I didn't choose life. I chose getting a PhD, instead.

To get through this job intact, I rely on my sense of humor, which is a dash of Billy Connolly, a bit of Invader Zim, a smattering of The Tick, a pinch of XKCD, and a dollop of The Daily Show. All mixed together in a giant comedic blender set on "frappe". Tequila optional. (Beer, not so much.)
