About Me

I am an open and outgoing individual with a deep passion for helping others, a commitment shaped by my profession as a paramedic and firefighter. My career in fire, rescue, and emergency services spans more than three decades, having begun in 1990, and has been dedicated to saving lives, building capacity, and strengthening disaster resilience.

I have been happily married for 30 years to my wife, who has been my school sweetheart. We dated for nine years before getting married, building a strong foundation that continues to guide our lives together. We are blessed with three beautiful children and one grandchild, who remain central to my life and values.

I have a strong appreciation for cultural diversity and enjoy engaging with people from different countries and backgrounds. Professionally, I am particularly passionate about search and rescue operations and have participated in several national and international disaster responses, including the Haiti and Nepal earthquakes, the Indonesia and Turkey earthquake responses, the Mozambique floods, the Jagersfontein tailings dam disaster, the Knysna fires, and the KwaZulu-Natal floods.

My career includes 16 years as a senior lecturer at the College of Emergency Medical Care and Rescue, where I contributed to the development and mentorship of future emergency care professionals. I currently serve as the Head of the Free State Disaster Management Centre, where I lead strategic disaster risk management, coordination, and response initiatives across the province. In addition, I render my services as a search and rescue coordinator for the humanitarian organisation Gift of the Givers, continuing my commitment to saving lives and strengthening community resilience in times of crisis.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I love travelling and meeting people from different cultures because it reminds me that, despite our different backgrounds, we are all connected. In South Africa, we live by the philosophy of Ubuntu: "I am because we are.” It speaks to humanity, kindness, and the shared responsibility we have towards one another.

Over time, I’ve noticed that Couchsurfing has changed. Hosting is no longer as simple as it once was; there are often expectations, conditions, and the need to prove compatibility before even getting a response. I understand this. Life has changed. People carry more responsibilities, safety concerns are real, and time and space have become limited resources.

For me, Couchsurfing is not just about accommodation; it is about connection in a world where genuine human interaction is becoming rare. The reality, however, is that travelling from South Africa is expensive. The strength of currencies like the Euro, Pound, or Dollar compared to the Rand makes even basic travel a financial challenge. For many of us, it’s not about luxury; it’s about the opportunity to experience the world despite economic limitations.
So I approach Couchsurfing with honesty and respect for people’s realities. I don’t expect anything beyond what someone is willing to offer. In a world that has become increasingly complex, I value simplicity; sometimes a genuine connection and a simple yes or no is more than enough.

Interests

My interests reflect both my professional life and personal passions. I am a passionate supporter of Liverpool FC and enjoy following soccer closely. I have a strong commitment to emergency care as a paramedic, and I value staying active through jogging, which helps maintain both physical and mental well-being. I am also deeply interested in health education, particularly in empowering communities with knowledge that can improve their quality of life. In addition, disaster management remains a central part of my life not just as a career but as a calling to serve, prepare, and protect communities in times of need.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Some of the most meaningful and memorable experiences in my life reflect both my passion for service and my commitment to family.
I had the privilege of taking my family on an educational journey across the world, visiting countries such as the United States, Hong Kong, Portugal, Spain, France, Belgium and the Netherlands, an experience that broadened our perspectives and created lifelong memories. I also had the honour of competing in the World Rescue Competition in Ireland, representing my skills and dedication in the field of rescue and emergency services on an international stage.
Giving back to the community remains close to my heart. I organised a Christmas party for over 1,000 children from a rural community in the Free State, bringing joy and hope to those who needed it most. Professionally, one of my most significant experiences was serving as a paramedic to former President Thabo Mbeki during a mission to Haiti, contributing to humanitarian efforts during a time of great need. On a personal level, one of my proudest moments was taking my grandson to the United States, continuing a legacy of exposure, learning, and shared experiences across generations.

Teach, Learn, Share

I enjoy sharing the richness of South African culture, our values, traditions, and especially the spirit of Ubuntu, which reflects humanity, respect, and our deep connection to one another. Through stories, food, and lived experiences, I offer a glimpse into what it means to come from a diverse and resilient nation. At the same time, I am always eager to learn from others, their cultures, perspectives, and ways of life. I believe that every interaction is an opportunity for mutual growth. For me, Couchsurfing is about meaningful exchange: teaching, learning, and sharing, not just a place to stay, but a connection that transcends borders.

What I Can Share with Hosts

I believe in mutual respect and meaningful exchange. I am more than willing to assist with cooking and cleaning, contributing to the home in a practical and respectful way. I also enjoy sharing my knowledge and experience, particularly in areas such as emergency care, disaster management, and health education.

Beyond that, I bring good conversation, cultural exchange, and a genuine spirit of Ubuntu, a sense of humanity, respect, and connection. I value simple, honest interactions and aim to leave every place and person better than I found them.
