About Me

CURRENT MISSION

In pursuit of the invisible.

ABOUT ME

I'm a novelist and travel writer. I knit a lot (socks while traveling, usually), and I also love to sew (clothing and quilts). I went vegan in April 2011 (have been vegetarian since 2001), and I really enjoy cooking and baking and telling people that it's actually pretty easy to abstain from animal products. (I believe in the power of semantics: call it a struggle, and you guarantee it will be. On the other hand, easy is easy. And I like things to be easy.)

PHILOSOPHY

More love. That's the answer to every problem.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I'm brand new to CouchSurfing—I just keep hearing about how awesome it is from friends I've made in Colombia and India, and I'd love to try it on my next big trip.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Interests

Creative writing and reading all sorts of good books, vegan cooking and baking, yoga, all kinds of art and crafts (knitting, sewing, quilting, embroidery, etc.) Ghost stories for bedtime entertainment, but seriously, I really am interested in spiritual and metaphysical subjects. And travel, of course.

Music, Movies, and Books

I love anything by Philip Pullman, Angela Carter, Neil Gaiman, Diana Gabaldon, or Sheridan Le Fanu. I read a lot of gothic stories. I'm not a huge film buff, but my favorites are Labyrinth, A Very Long Engagement, The Last Temptation of Christ, It's a Wonderful Life, The Secret of Roan Inish, and Anne of Green Gables. I listen to classical or choral music while I write and indie rock when I run. Elbow is my all-time favorite band, and I have a soft spot in my childish heart for Nat King Cole.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

It's hard to pick just one, but I did rappel down a waterfall near San Gil in Colombia earlier this year. That was really fun.

Teach, Learn, Share

I facilitate creative writing workshops, and would also be thrilled to teach you how to knit, or show you how to prepare some quick and easy vegan meals.
