Music, Movies, and Books
Favourite Reads on paper or screen - The Wire magazine, One hundred years of solitude, WWI amazing books - Sardinian Brigade, anything by Ernset Hemingway, Nothing New on the Western Front, Storm of Steel, Under Fire...etc.
Slaughterhouse 5, "The Road to Ithaca" poem, The Day Lasts Longer than 100 years, any graphic novels by Charles Burns or Chris Ware, any review or "Twit" by Douglas Wolk (my all time favourite music critic), the "Economy" part of any newspaper... i'm addicted...
Watch - Cherry Blossom, Clerks, Pulp Fiction (i'm still in the Tarantino camp these days too), lots of recent and excellent Israeli films - Waltz with Bashir, Beaufort, Once i was, etc.
Television? Only the most ultra-trashy reality shows which bring out berserk laughter from WTF situations...
Music - Spinster Sister, Barbara Manning, My Bloody Valentine, Wire, Silver Jews, numerous Kiwi pop bands, Run On, Monotonix live!, Animal Collective, Sister Chain & Brother John, Bjork, MIA, Asha Bhosle, Tabu Ley Rochereau, Nusrat Fateh Ali Kahn, Os Mutantes or anything Tropicalia whtsoever, the Raincoats, Stereolab, Slint, Girls Against Boys, Lee Scratch Perry, Kyrgyz folk, Brian Eno, Mbira music, Javanese gamelan, and will i ever find that excellent song by Bahati Bukuku that i heard on the radio in Tanzania or the Ethio-funk song they played on the Ethiopian Airlines flight that had the wrong song-listing in the flight-booklet , God-damn!
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
Going to a Japanese indie show at SuperDeluxe, Tokyo which was exactly like what i would imagine a Japanese indie show to be... Wow!
The pilgrimage to Beket Ata, Kazakhstan with local pilgrims driving through the huge oil fields and barren deserts.
Joining a Kazakh-Siberian archeological expedition in Sauran and receiving the greatest hospitality.
Trekking the Alatau mountains solo in the snow and being helped by, on the final leg by a wonderful dog.
The pilgrimage to Tirumalai, Andhra Pradesh with my friend Naresh. Well, in fact, almost anywhere in India was amazing.
