ABOUT ME

This section makes me panic. Can we talk about this when we meet? Over a cup of tea or a local beer? Or while taking a walk on the streets of your home town or of mine? I really want to know all about you too.

Well, in short: I am currently trying to finish my masters degree in International Development Studies. I've recently spent a couple of years living and working with humanitarian NGOs in Liberia, West Africa. That was amazing and I want to go back as soon as I can. Being home is good, but I am getting a little bit restless here, and I want to be out there, in that big big world, where I feel I see and learn something new every day, where life is more unpredictable, where people are wonderful and crazy, where my eyes and ears never get tired and bored.

PHILOSOPHY

I never wrote 'carpe diem' on my school backpack with that white editing stuff that I don't know the name of in English. I am still changing my personal philosophy every day.

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I love the concept of CouchSurfing and having memories of people instead of just places. I don't like being a tourist, but with CouchSurfing I get to enjoy feeling like I'm somebody's guest when I visit new places. I equally enjoying welcoming surfers to the places I am in, and to show them my home the way I see it and love it.

I recommend CouchSurfing highly to everyone I know who isn't already a member!

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I have surfed couches in Eastern Europe, Russia and Brazil and have had amazing experiences.
When I lived in Brazil with my (now ex-)boyfriend we hosted a lot of other travellers, and I really enjoyed helping people out. (check out the profile for denizdecapo for comments)

Both professionally and personally, I am interested in development work from an anthropological perspective. I like travelling to see what I have never seen before and to challenge the boundaries of my own logic.

I like books and newspapers, classical and indie music and crappy TV, food and sleeping, going out drinking and embarrassing myself and others, doing crazy bold gestures to show my friends how much I love them. I am in a girls' marching band called 'The Majorettes From Hell' that play heavy metal accompanied by Maoist choreography. I have the physique of a spaghetti, but I enjoy skiing and surfing. I recently started fencing classes, because... well, I guess because I just always found Zorro to be kind of cool (I have a general soft spot for superheroes, but I'm afraid I will never learn that thing that Spiderman does with shooting webs from his wrists).

Music, mmm. I used to play classical piano and a bit of violin, and I have impressed many people playing the Beverly Hills 90210 theme song on my harmonica. In high school I refused to talk to people who were not Depeche Mode fans. Today I still enjoy the classics from Elvis to Bach - I am quite openminded, mellow reggae drives me absolutely mad, but I'm warming up to it. I love to hear music in its proper context; reggaeton at a beach party in Cuba, Afropop on a sweaty dance floor in Liberia, Bach in Berlin's Philharmonic concert hall.

Movies... Honestly, I am bored by Fellini and the like. I prefer movies with big green monsters who get really strong when they get angry. That I can relate to; I am like that after too much vodka.

Books. I get high on beautiful words. I don't have a favorite, but I like books without heroes that are beautifully written.

Travelling is always amazing and is one of the things I enjoy most. I don't know if I can come up with any travel guide-style highlights just like this, but there have been a lot of golden moments making me a rich and grateful person.
