About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Let's have some fun!

ABOUT ME

Hi,

My name is Matt. My family and friends are the world to me. I grew up all over this beautiful country; Oregon, California, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Georgia, Kentucky and Indiana. I've been in the Louisville metro area for the last 14+ years. The city has grown so much in that time and I am proud to call myself a Louisvillian (even though I am currently across the river in Indiana, hehe).

PHILOSOPHY

Stay cool.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

My roommate Jeremy (see my friends) has been an active member for as long as I can remember. I "co-host" his surfers when Jeremy is unavailable.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I've only hosted through Jeremy Bledsoe so far. We've hosted 50+ individuals over the last two years. I can't wait to start surfing!

Interests

Music, specifically dance music, but anything with soul will do. Skateboarding and snowboarding were my life until I shattered my wrist. Now I'm into motorcycles. It gives me the same sensation I can only describe as flying. I love good food and good bourbon. I also enjoy gardening. Random things I like; hawks, memes, going to baseball games, meeting cool people who inspire me, fashion, the classics.

Music, Movies, and Books

Hmm, this could go on for days. I really really like music and movies. I guess I will list favorite concerts I've attended (in no particular order); Daft Punk, Air, Simian Mobil Disco, Radiohead, Rage Against the Machine (with Wu-Tang Clan!), Outkast, Justice, Junior Boys, N.E.R.D., VHS or Beta, !!!, Death From Above 1979, M83, Sade, LCD Soundsystem, The Rapture, Cut Copy, Van She, The Presets, Tiger & Woods, Bad Boy Bill, Chemical Brothers, Soul Clap, The White Stripes, this could go on for a while... I'm just gonna stop now.
Movies; They Live, Pulp Fiction, The Life Aquatic, Nacho Libre, pretty much anything with Will Farrell, Paul Rudd, Jack Black or Bill Murray. Wes Anderson movies are always good. I really hate these kinds of questions because I like all kinds of movies.
Books, I wish I read more, I'm kind of impatient in that regard. I like autobiographies of rock stars like Patti Smith's 'Just Kids', and Keith Richards 'Life'. The three part saga by Louis de Bernieres 'Senor Vivo and the Coca Lord' is amazing and inspiring. I like VICE magazine a lot.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

A few months ago (January, 2012) I helped save a guys life. He was about to commit suicide by jumping off a bridge. At first I was really annoyed because traffic was stopped and I wanted to get to a party (I thought he just had a flat tire). I got out of my truck to see what the hold up was and two people were talking to a guy leaning against the guard rail. I was about 100 feet away and as I started walking toward them the guy tried to get back in his car. The other guy wouldn't let him. A struggle ensued, I started running.

When I came up on them the girl was screaming "Help me! Help me!" She had his shirt collar, the guy had one of his wrists. I played a lot of hockey growing up, and I've also been a bouncer in a pretty rough bar, so I instinctually tackled him in one fluid motion, grabbing his free arm and bending it back, like cops do. I asked "did you call the cops?" The guy next to me (who was at least five years younger than me, and looked like he was ready for a night out on the town as well) said "I am a cop! Do you have him? I'll get my cuffs! Make sure he doesn't move his legs!" I shoot him a, 'WTF does it look like' look and he goes to retrieve the cuffs from the car.

I had one knee on his back and one on the back of his neck. The jumper says "I won't move" and I believe him so I take my knee off his neck. The girl is now petting his hair. I ask if she knows him. She's crying so hard she can't talk, but shakes her head no. The kid was young, maybe not even 20. Time kind of stopped. I decided I'd say something to him. "Hey man, your nights going to get a lot worse, but your life is going to get a lot better. I've been there, I know. I tried to kill myself with pills. I held a gun to my head getting off them. This life is a gift, and you need to fight every day to realize that. It's not easy, but trust me its worth it." He looked up at me, "You're really good at your job." I started laughing and said, "this isn't my job, it's just my life."
