About Me

CURRENT MISSION

To discover/rediscover metaphoric catalysts (certain and uncertain) that have grown scarce in my veins of late.

ABOUT ME

After I graduated high school, way back when in 1997, I spent half a year traveling around the United States by thumb and chance. It was a transformative experience.
While the intervening years have been half-full of growth, ideas, knowledge, and the like (and full-to-bursting with dear friends), I have come to the conclusion that I need to wander past the chrysalis again, to move around as a way of moving forward, to abandon security as an act of faith and to seek the realization of ideas/ideals as an act of faith.
Negative neuroses to discard, diffuse, transcend or translate: I have, over the years and years, liked less and less who I am when I am alone. I've been an aspiring writer for too long without the will or wherewithal to shed the modifier. I've been too lazy, too prone to wasting time, more likely to hatch ideas than to raise them, too inclined to plan without action. I am striving to change this.

PHILOSOPHY

My goal is to live as honest a life a possible, to set my magnetic and true north as "know thy self" and "to thy own self be true." I want to live life with only the most transparent of masks, to acquire knowledge and to apply said knowledge.
Everyone is a lens through which the world is viewed and I try to live only by my own focus and polish.

In a nutshell: be curious, pursue curiosity.

Interests

Semiotics, psychology, surrealism, literature, philosophy, mythology. Crafting. Writing.

Music, Movies, and Books

As succinct as possible:

Movies: Early Godard (and the nouvelle vague in general) especially Alphaville; Jean-Pierre Jeunet; Jean-Pierre Melville; Wes Anderson; silent films; many more.

Music: very varied. I tend to prefer complexity and vitality. I tend to shy away from screaming.

Books: so many. Raymond Chandler, Dashiell Hammett, Ross MacDonald; Andre Breton, Benjamin Peret, Paul Eluard; Thomas Pynchon; Don DeLillo; Julio Cortazar, Jorge-Luis Borges, Gabriel Garcia Marquez. So many more.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I've been experimenting lately with the as-close-to-constant-as-possible mantra of "All is new." It has pretty much made "amazing" a more common adjective.

Teach, Learn, Share

Teach: What I know is either scattered about a magpie's nest of tiny knowledges, or deeply ingrained as partially part and parcel in line with my own neuroses and oddities. I believe myself to be fairly adept as a sounding board for ideas; I have been known to bounce back ideas at strange but fruitful angles.

Learn: Dear me oh my. There are so many things I want to learn (if for nothing else than to expand my magpie's nest), ranging from masonry to baking, bookbinding to French. I want to learn everything.
