About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Teaching TEFL in Myanmar and make the most of living abroad

ABOUT ME

I'm looking forward to teaching English (I move in early Sept) and the opportunity to see the results of my work. I'll also be looking to volunteer whilst I'm over there.

I used to work in Sport Development and particularly find interest in sport for development, such as community or health promotion.

I took a break and researched and wrote about peoples interaction with sport as part of their identity. I've now published my book The Other Olympics.

I've been part of couchsurfing for a while and always found it a good way to meet people with a story and it proved so as I wrote my book, I hope to meet more

I'm moving onto my next project now and no doubt I'll look to meet more couchsurfers as I do.

More Generally...

I'd like to play lots of different sports, enjoy just about them all, particularly play to sociaise. I enjoy local culture, particularly the eccentric.

I'm a fan of local old fashioned pubs, because they give you a sense of he true area, I worry about all these chain bars. I drink 'real ale' because I prefer to taste something plus I can try something different each time.

Saying that I'm always keen to give the local nightlife a go to!

I'm also becoming more adventurous with my food, all part of trying something different.

Started to do a bit of solo travel, like to see a mix of natural wonders and local culture, also quite interested in ancient cultures, but the best thing is often the people you meet

PHILOSOPHY

Make the effort (i.e. I always try to learn the basics of any local language, you may not be able to master it but you should always try)

Try to make a difference (if only in a little way)

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

When I've had my own place I open it to hosting, I've showed people around the places I know and tried new ones with them. I've been to local meetups and surfed a few times.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

My first true experience was very valuable, landing in Mumbai would have been a massive culture shock for a lad from a quiet Lincolnshire village, but meeting a local to show me how it all worked was valuable beyond description.

Since then I've surfed or met up with surfers all over the world; Armenia, Qatar, New York, Egypt, Israel and all over Europe.

Interests

Sport, Teaching, Researching Sport and Identity, Pubs, Eccetric Events, Travel,

A countryside boy but I like the variety cities have to offer. Prefer little independent places to chain pubs; always good to sit in a local cafe or bar to see the real heart of the town

Music, Movies, and Books

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - every hip young frood needs to know where his towel is...My taste in music is wide, though prefer to avoid over-commercialised dance, pop and r'n'b, prefer my indie.

Also have a wide taste in Movies, again I enjoy classic old films starring James Stewart or Steve McQueen as well as more modern fare.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Attending the World Transplant Games (for those who have received Organ Donation) and by coincidence couchsurfing with a Paralympic athlete.

Shopping with the Palestinian National Football team, Interviewing a Princess of Liechtenstein, walking through Manhattan in the wee hours of the morning.

Teach, Learn, Share

I've done quite a bit of sports coaching in the past, junior football, womens cricket. A font of useless knowledge that some people might find use of.

Countries I’ve Visited

Armenia, Austria, Barbados, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Egypt, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, India, Israel, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Macedonia, Malta, Monaco, Montenegro, Netherlands, Oman, Palestine, Poland, Qatar, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, United States, Vatican City State
