One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Two friends and I decided it would be a good idea to try and hike up a mountain. On the northern tip of Sweden, 300km north of the Arctic Circle, in January, in waist-deep snow. It was really tough going, so we were struggling and sweating and cursing by the time we were halfway up and started discussing turning around and just taking the ski lift. But our thoughts turned to Hillary and Tenzing, so we pushed on. A little further up however, a surprise lay in wait for us. Suddenly hearing a loud crack, the 3 of us froze on the spot, and fell deadly silent. We looked up the slope, and to our dismay, the snowline had sagged, and cracked about a metre deep, and started sliding down the slope straight towards us! We shat a collective brick, and because we couldn't move quickly, grabbed onto the closest piece of vegetation we could find, which were just little shrubs. I think we all knew how useless that would be, but when your back is to the wall, you do what you can..

The snow rumbled downwards, but seemed to lose a little bit of momentum before sliding around our legs, but still pushing us towards a steeper bit of slope. Eventually the mini-avalanche ground to a halt, just metres from the edge of the drop. For about 5 minutes, all we could do was stand there with wide eyes and crapping ourselves that another one could begin at any moment, from the unstable snowline above the slide that had almost buried us alive, under tonnes of cold, fluffy snow.

Needless to say, we made up our minds quite quickly about going back down..
