ABOUT ME
My name is Mike, I've been living in beautiful Boulder Colorado for more than 15 years now. I came out here for college and never left! Even if you're not staying on my couch, you should try to see Boulder some time, it's just such a pretty place to be. I try to go camping in the Rocky Mountains on a pretty regular basis. Right now I am in school and working full time. I'm a neurobiologist and my specific area of interest is in trying to come up with better therapies for veterans who have both a brain injury and PTSD.
PHILOSOPHY
I really appreciate the quote from Mahatma Gandhi "You must be the change you wish to see in the world." I try to live by that. One of the biggest "changes I wish to see" is that people from the United States tend to be somewhat ignorant about the rest of the world, and what other people think, and so I go out of my way to learn others' perspectives.
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING
So far, I'm just learning the ropes!
COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE
I've been doing the couch surfing thing long before I heard of couchsurfing.org! Most of my couchsurfing experience has been *hosting* which is great, but I'd like to start doing more surfing myself! I've been hosting people for a long time, but "officially" joined couchsurfing.org in the summer of 2009. It seems like a really great community and resource.
Interests
It would probably be easier to make a list of thing that I am *not* interested in... I would say that my two favorite things are probably learning and teaching.
- bouldering
- camping
- surfing
- mountains
Music, Movies, and Books
I have an impressive collection of bad science fiction movies from the 50s and 60s. I love seeing live music and dancing. I spend a lot of time reading for my studies, and so I don't do as much pleasure-reading as I'd like to. But I read a ton of scientific journal articles!
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
I had a bear walk straight up to me and sniff my leg when I was camping in the Adirondacks. She looked me right in the eye and we were both really calm and curious.
Teach, Learn, Share
I am earning my phd in neurobiology, so if you have brain questions I can help you! It's fun to talk about and I find that most everyone is fascinated by the subject.
