About Me

CURRENT MISSION

I'm moving to Canberra as part of a career change. After ten years as a freelance foreign correspondent, I'm getting out of the journalism game and becoming a foreign policy adviser at the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet.

ABOUT ME

I'm a 33-year-old journalist, critic and screenwriter. Since 2010, I've worked as a freelance foreign correspondent in more than thirty countries, specialising in first-person narrative journalism, political commentary, and travel writing. Some of my most memorable trips and stories: visiting Ascension Island and Saint Helena in the middle of the Atlantic, reporting from Iraqi Kurdistan, visiting Ernest Hemingway's house in Cuba, and living on a houseboat in Kashmir.

My work has appeared in The Australian, The Daily Beast, Politico, The Guardian, The Monthly, and more. I was a staff reporter with The Australian between 2008 and 2010 and a reporter at ABC Radio Current Affairs between 2016 and 2017.

PHILOSOPHY

"Anyone who lives within their means suffers from a lack of imagination." - Oscar Wilde

"There are only two things that can destroy a healthy man: love trouble, ambition, and financial catastrophe. And that's already three things, and there are a lot more." - Peter Altenberg

"Remaining debonair means that one must always be ready to go to the next bar or the next war, no matter how late the hour or how unattractive the war." - Irwin Shaw

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I couchsurfed my way across the United States and Mexico between June and December 2010. It's been a long time between couches, but it was an amazing experience and I'm still friends with many of the people who were kind enough to host me.
