About Me
ABOUT ME
I like travelling, meeting new people and sharing thoughts and that's why I'm here. I'm interested in cities - how residents can influence decision-making using participatory tools, how to integrate and negotiate different values and ways of living in urban planning, and how urban structure affects personal well-being and environmental footprint.
I am soon to defend my PhD thesis on relationships between green spaces and quality of life. I'm currently involved in a research project at the University of Iceland and this alone is an amazing thing - Iceland is beyond beautiful. But the research itself is also very interesting and touches many issues relevant for both everyday life and urban politics.
I'm also a music fan. I used to be a music journalist, had a few bands in the past, and now play bass in this post rock folk band: https://wearedeerdaniel.bandcamp.com/. I am also involved in my city and neighborhood political and cultural life, which consumes a lot of energy, but allows to network with many people and makes life in town much more interesting. Finally, I love cycling and it's my preferred way of getting around.

Music, Movies, and Books
Lots and lots of music. Many different genres, from alternative to world music. Used to write a music blog and host a music news show in a local radio. Lastly I dig African sounds because of my radio program and djing in clubs.
I like a lot of music, some (older and newer) classics like Broken Social Scene, Radiohead, The Beatles etc. I like Nordic and especially Icelandic sound from The Knife, Sigur Rós, Ólafur Arnalds and others, and Bjork is a great inspiration to me. I also really like this good old melancholic fellow John Frusciante. When I work I usually have some deep house on my headphones.
I like old and new films and some documentaries, but always such that show something new about human nature or are just atmospheric and beautiful.
Too many books to little time. I like XX century classics, unconventional science-fiction like Stanislaw Lem, Philip K. Dick, Arkady and Boris Strugatsky and so on, some surrealists like Boris Vian and Roland Topor, contemporary authors and travelling books, such as "Bicycle Diaries" by David Byrne. I also read quite a lot of popular science books on happiness, sustainability and urban planning.
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
Probably the most amazing thing in the world is meeting amazing people. I am very grateful for the experience of visiting Syria in 2010 months before the protests and the devastating war.
