One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

To catch a glimpse of the real Lesotho, we hiked through the Drakensberg Mountains with little more than a topo map and compass. One morning, while navigating through some thick cloud cover, we topped a ridge and met a herd of a few dozen wild baboons that were living in small rock caves. They sat on their blue butts and watched us pass very cautiously and very impressed.

While riding the Simonstown train into Cape Town, a blind man with ragged clothes and a beat up guitar boarded and sat a few seats down from me. Perhaps he played for tips somewhere along the rail line, but here, as he started strumming, it seemed to come purely from an old free soul. As the train filled up with commuters, tourists, young and old, everyone joined in his old hymns. The English, Sotho and Xhosa blended together in melodies and harmonies that filled the train car like a cathedral. That man and his music gave us all a few beautiful moments to slow down our busy lives together.
