Aww...pshaw you don't want to hear all about little ol' me. Oh? So I'm a baker who mooonlights as a philosophy prof. I play music. I like culture--knowing about other ones and knowing what is idiosyncratic about the ones I think I already know. I'm sort of a nerd about it.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I feel I have only just begun to particpate with CSing but my limited experiences surfing have shattered my expectations. Our hosts offered more than couches (and comfy ones at that) they offered true hospitality, something that seems lost in tourist traps. I will continue to solicit couches to sleep on and offer my own.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Found my Doppelganger and long-lost brother in the form of a Danish Couch Surfer. (Seriously, he stayed for 10 days instead of the two he'd planned) I'm becoming a more seasoned surfer and have hosted a bunch In fact, in one form or another I tend to couch surf wherever I travel. Whether it's being invited to sleep in someone's backyard to get out of the rain, or being saved by a random old man in a railroad tunnel in Italy, I've always just found ways to make due when the going got tough. I did find that Germans don't like it when you "couch surf" in their train station--but then again I could've used a softer touch. Getting out a pillow and an alarm clock sort of smacks of American arrogance.

Interests

The arts--books, movies, films. Philosophy. The sports-soccer, football, basketball, foosball (definitely a sport). The life--hiking, chatting, not-working, drinking the beer, chatting while drinking the beer, brewing the beer, quitting the cigarettes, making the music, shooting the shit, throwing the discs at the baskets, thinking about the life and so on, Forever and Ever. Oh, and Gunsmoke.

Music, Movies, and Books

Because it would be silly to list everything I can think of in this space, I'll just say one from each that's on my mind.
Movies: Triplets of Belleville
Books: One Hundred Years of Solitude is still my favorite. After that: Flannery O'Connor (she makes me wonder if I'm a closet Catholic and a closet Southerner)
Music: Soul Music. There I said it. I love good music from every genre, but that covers what really touches me.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Speaking in tongues (some say going into shock) on my pilgrimage on the Camino de Santiago.

Teach, Learn, Share

I can teach the following: esoteric Western philosophy, how not to make money, how to think up hare-brained schemes, how to throw beers that claim they have great taste, while being less filling, how to chase friends and influence meter maids, how to drive with only your knees, and most importantly how to combine words and phrases to make better words and phrases such as (scourage, scruffian, and it ain't rocket surgery)
I would like to learn most things, though I'm pretty sure I'll never be able to paint well or do origami. My good friend thinks that I draw like a third grader--it's a compliment, he says.
