ABOUT ME

If I'm being honest, the first thing is I love to talk to people and that the volume of my voice is loud, too. But mostly that I laugh... a lot. My best friend's mom calls me risuena. I don't think there is any feeling in the world better than laughing so my hard stomach hurts and I'm wiping tears from my eyes.

I graduated with my B.A. in English, emphasis in writing, last December. After 6 months of unfinished plans and disappointing leads, I decided to indulge in the passion of travel and fulfill my long awaited dream of experiencing South America. After a few weeks here I realized what everyone had told me all along: two months is not enough time! So I've decided to stick around a bit, spending half my time teaching English and freelance writing, the other half exploring parts of South America I have yet to see.

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Meeting new people, whether by staying with them, hosting them, or hanging out with them when I travel to a new city or they travel to mine.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

It takes an old idea into the modern era. The oldest stories in the world tell tales of people traveling through foreign lands and relying on the kindness of strangers to find a place to sleep. With this project, people from all over the world connect, sharing ideas, culture, food, philosophies, stories and friendships they may never otherwise have known.

Zainteresowania

I was an English major in college so I love to read and write. I'm very interested in film and how it translates across cultures. Obviously, travel is a HUGE interest of mine and I want to do as much of it as I can while I'm still young. I follow politics and world events. I speak enough Spanish to get by, but my number one goal right now is to be fluent. By far, my biggest interest in life is meeting new people and hearing their stories.

Muzyka, filmy i książki

I love all kinds of music. I listen to a lot of hip hop and rap, and I love dancing to Latin music. I can't really list movies and books that I like; there are so many! I feel like picking a favorite song/book/movie is like picking a favorite child. But I will say I enjoy reading creative non-fiction and classics, everything from political commentary (for example, Orwell and Dostoyevsky) to monster books (for example, Jekyll and Hyde and Frankenstein). I'm currently reading Imagine by Jonah Lehrer and Motorcycle Diaries by Che Guevara.

When I was 19, I took a year off school to travel around the United States working on a political campaign. I met so many amazing people it's hard to pick just one... but one does stand out above the rest (although it does seem a bit trite to summarize it in a few brief words here, I will try). I was working in Mississippi (a state that is still very segregated)and started talking to potential voters about the upcoming election that was 2 days away. Our main goal was to remind them to vote. I turned to an elderly black woman somewhere in her nineties and asked, "Ma'am, do you plan to vote this Tuesday?" She looked up at me and responded, "Honey, I've been voting ever since I had the chance."

Cooking: I may not be the best at it, but that doesn't change the fact that it's something I love to do. Always interested in learning new recipes and sharing some of my favorites from back home... preferably over a bottle of wine!

Books: Like I've mentioned a thousand times already, I love literature. I think the written word is the most important tool we have as human beings. Love, love, LOVE to share my favorites and learn about new ones.

Culture: I participate in CS because I want to learn about new cultures: what it's like to grow up in a country different from my own, ideas and philosophies learned throughout life, and about families and friends who inspire you are all things I want to hear about!
