About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Looking for fun and feeling groovy

ABOUT ME

I am from Vancouver Island, Canada. It is a pretty wild place where living in the bush is normal and bears roam through your backyard... I love it! I am currently living in Izmir, Turkey, learning turkish and exploring the country with my husband, Ilke. We are a chill couple, very easy-going, open minded and like to talk about politics, farming life and travel plans. We have a whole bunch of crazy dreams for the future, but before we can tackle those we are trying to travel as much as possible.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I have had many amazing experiences being hosted around the world, and feel very fortunate for the friends I've made. This network to me is really brilliant as it lets you meet people with a similar attitude yet different perspective and then share all you have for that moment you are together to learn and open your mind.

I love to see a new place as locals do, hang out and talk about the local past-times, traditions and news. Make new friends and meet families. I prefer to spend my time exploring the streets by walking or bicycling, rather than spend lots of money on museums and attractions. I look for hosts that are interested in the same experience as me and I am not interested in just getting a free place to sleep.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Have couchsurfed in France, Spain, Turkey, Israel and Palestine. Turkish hosts are amazingly hospitable and will treat you like family. Israeli hosts know how to have a really good time and party. We have hosted in Vancouver and Izmir and have had really great experiences. Also... my husband and I first met each other at a couchsurfing party.... You could say that couchsurfing has changed our lives ;)

Much of my couch surfing experience (not hosting, but surfing) I do not have references for. This is my own fault! Advice for Surfers: when travelling with a friend, be proactive and write references, even if your friend already did!

I haven't paid to be verified yet because I kind of feel like it's just a money grab... any thoughts on this? I am really interested in what serious couch surfers and hosts think about it!

Interests

Ilke and I really enjoy doing stuff outside, travelling in our van and taking on new adventures. Especially with our dog, Izmir!!! We both have experience farming and are interested in food production. We want to start a farm in the future.

I love going to live shows or just jamming with friends in a living room. I play guitar, but can be a little shy when it comes to performing. I also love sewing and crafting new things, I like to have projects on the go all the time. Thrifting old materials and creating something new is hobby of mine. Sitting in coffee shops with friends is something I love... my husband, on the other hand thinks it is quite boring!

I love to travel because all of those crazy experiences you have let you LEARN and understand all the other people in this world. And I really believe it is a huge privilege, after seeing many people from different places that don't have the means to travel.

I recently got an instagram account and have really enjoyed sharing photos of the places I travel and finding others out there sharing their travel photos. If you want to check out my account it is my name, megmcillfaterick

I can't lie to you... the Harry Potter series is still my all time favourite!

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

ONE?! I guess meeting this crazy wonderful guy and deciding to take on the world with him :D

Teach, Learn, Share

We can definitely share conversations! Ilke and I love to discuss politics, tell stories from travels and our homes, and the craziness of being in an international relationship. We have a lot of travel plans for the future and we are trying to learn as much as possible from hosts and well travelled folks. We can share some awesome Turkish cuisine. And maybe we can play some guitar, or a game of soccer, or just chill out. Mostly, we like to chill out.
