PHILOSOPHY
One of my favorite quotes is, paraphrased: "Unless you [explore] different points of view, your mind will eventually close, and you'll become a prisoner to a certain point of view that you'll never question." - Mohamed El-Elrian
To me, this is what it's all about. There's not so much a discrete purpose to live as there is a process to life. Discovering that process might be as close to a purpose as we'll ever find.
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING
I'm always looking to meet new people. If I've got a place to stay, I'm definitely willing to help out interesting travelers for a night or two.
COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE
A few times--great people and great experiences.
Interests
Free time comprises words, words, and words. I'm an avid reader, prefer audiobooks over TV or movies, and always select a tête-à-tête over an evening at home.
There's nothing so exhilarating to me as having my own biases and experiences challenged and stretched. Exposure to a novel, cogently voiced perspective is that often sought and ever rarified experience.
I'm a health-focused guy, don't drink or smoke, and spend at least an hour a day in the gym doing one activity or another. If it weren't 50 degrees outside where I live, I'd love to get back into outdoor activities as well. Ah for the feeling of non-sandblasted wind in my hair...
Music, Movies, and Books
My Grandma told me I used to force her to rent Beetlejuice every time I visited her when I was young. Is it weird that I memorized the entire incantation they use to resurrect the dead?
These days, I rarely turn my eyes to a box for more than 30 minutes or more (Futurama...Family Guy are my secret shames). If you're a fan of Strangers With Candy (television show, not the movie), though, we're likely karmic soul mates.
I'm nothing if not a dilettante philosopher, though most of my knowledge comes from textbooks more than original works. I do love Voltaire, though, and have to say Candide is one of my favorite classics of all time. Having lived in Utah, it's all the more amusing.
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
Been beat up by a priest in Tokyo, played tag with a tiger in Guangzhou, and had my head split open in Gujerat.
Places I've been:
visited 16 states (7.11%)Create your own visited map of The World or jurisdische veraling duits?
Teach, Learn, Share
There's a clear distinction between being alive and actually living. The more I experience the world and study history and humanity, the more I am convinced that few achieve the latter.
Of course, it's false to claim a surity that one has approximated the Truth in one's life...actualized a clarity of reason or purpose in the world...the pursuit of it, I believe, is the surest way to ensure that--if nothing else--progress is being made.
