About Me

My name is Mel and I moved from Vancouver Island, Canada to Hamburg Germany in September 2015. I love music, film, cooking, shopping, and exploring new places. I also like to drink beer/wine and good tea/coffee!

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I'm on Couchsurfing because I want to be able to meet new and interesting people in the cities that I visit, in addition to visiting neighbourhoods within the cities that I visit that I may not otherwise get to see.

Music, Movies, and Books

I love a lot of different genres of music: indie rock, 90's pop, hip hop, electronic (especially vaporwave), jazz, classical, metal, and dreamy music like dreampop and shoegaze. My favourite bands include Beach House, Jeff Buckley, the Sugarcubes, Walter TV, Mac DeMarco, Kate Bush, and the Cocteau Twins among many others.
I love good film and tv series. My favourites include Black Mirror, Master of None, Six Feet Under; films by Cronenberg, Bergman, Tarkovsky, as well as documentaries and so on.
My favourite author is probably Margaret Atwood, but I'm trying to read more as there are many great authors I haven't yet discovered.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

For six months when I was 18 I did a youth volunteer program with ten other youth from across Canada and we all lived in a house together in three different Canadian cities. We all had jobs with non-profit organizations in each city that we lived in, and we did other volunteer opportunities and small weekend trips in our free time as well. It was a very challenging and fun experience which has made my move to Germany a little bit easier.
