I think hosts can be quite pretentious about wanting something back ("cultural exchange"...lol) from surfers. I'm more pragmatic - if I can save you some money and free you up to do cool shit instead, I'm all about that. I don't expect anything back from you, so long as you respect my space and my belongings.
