About Me

I am 24 years old, from Maine, and I am currently interning with the US Forest Service in northern California.

I have been moving around the country (US) a bit for the last few years, doing short term jobs in conservation and research, and am always looking for a new place and new opportunity.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I sometimes quote a friend in saying "I live my life anecdotally." I love doing things that lead to good stories, and I tend to find the positives and humor in the strangest and most difficult situations. The less conventional travel arrangements tend to lead to the richest experiences and the most fun, in my opinion.

I am also a huge fan of human kindness; nothing gives me more energy and pleasure than goods deeds, including things like hosting couch surfers and picking up hitchhikers. Right now I am not in a position to perform these particular deeds, but I find it very heartening that so many people are willing, and I look forward to passing on the kindness.

Interests

Research, plants, and environmental issues are my passions. I am also hooked on travel, hiking, meeting new people, and exploring. I love learning from people and listening to their stories.

I am very interested in learning new languages, though I am fluent in none but English. I spent some time in Madagascar in the fall and drew an amazing amount of satisfaction from picking up the Malagasy language and attempting to use it to interact more effectively with the people around me.

I am trying very hard to silence my pride and try things I am uncomfortable with. Right now, that means learning to play guitar and attempting other things I know are difficult for me.

Music, Movies, and Books

I am pretty into folk music, but I also enjoy a little something from most genres.

My favorite movie is Casablanca, but The Princess Bride is right up there as well. I've recently realized that is the characters, more than anything, that make or break a movie for me.

The Golden Spruce is one of the most interesting books I've ever read. I also love The Missing Piece Meets the Big O, by Shel Silverstein, and tend to give The Giving Tree to friends with babies.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Living on a sailboat for a semester and travelling from Tahiti to Hawaii.

Teach, Learn, Share

I love to talk about the environment and the issues surrounding it. I have taught environmental science, and I love sharing this interest with others.

I have also studied and taught art and love to sit down and paint or draw with friends, whether they want some instruction, or we just want to work in good company.

I have a few good hula hooping tricks up my sleeve and would love to share or exchange those with a fellow hooper. I'd love any tips on my guitar playing--really just getting going!

What I Can Share with Hosts

I like problem solving and fixing things up, so I can be good to have around the house to get some projects done or lend a hand.

I am also learning to enjoy cooking for others. I'd be happy to prepare and share a meal with a host.
