Über mich

Hi, you: I moved to Hong Kong for a while, living in a dorm and can't host anybody sadly. Enjoy Estonia, it's beautiful! Go to places besides the old town, Tallinn has some really cool spots. :)

So... Let's try.
Here are some things that describe me: I tend to have more projects at hand than I can handle. I am restless and perfectionist when carrying out the tasks that matter to me.
I procrastinate a lot by dancing at home - it's a way to re-establish and develop my relationship with the world and with myself, it's my source of peace. I adore music, although I know nothing about its more technical aspects.

I enjoy painting, photographing, walks in nature. I feel at home in the forest. And many of the most beautiful moments of my life so far have involved the sea in one way or another. (And for many of those walks of exploration, curiosity and bliss, I have to thank my partner.)

I am very spontaneous. O boy, I get childishly excited by the "changes of plan" that involve little unexpected adventures, even if the 'adventure' is just an unplanned ten-minute walk or going 100 meters farther than was planned.

Walking. I like to walk. Walking feels very free. (The pedestrian creates the city! We make the city by creating routes, personal and public, making spaces into places, exploring different roads and shortcuts, establishing new habits and expectations. Lade Braes in St Andrews winds by the river, past cottages and rose gardens and narrower places. My first walk there was starry-eyed, happy. I encountered a lady with two muddy dogs who ran to greet me before going to "inspect" the river water, sniffing the ground.)

Warum ich bei Couchsurfing bin

It's a nice way to get to know people and make their trip a little homier, hopefully.

Interessen

Dancing. You know the dance that Denis Lavant performs to David Bowie's "Modern Love" in "Mauvais Sang"? Yes.
(Last week I ventured into an empty aerobics room in a hotel, closed the door and danced like no one was watching. And then I saw that the blinds were open and I could easily be seen from the corridor. Oops. It's fun to experiment around, though, and try different moves that seemed completely silly or weird, non-established, non-standard, playing with expressions, styles of movement, everyday activities, morphing into newer and newer things.)

Nature photography. A passion of mine since I was 12. You can see my photos at http://merily.planet.ee/
I try to observe as if I'm not there, will myself invisible. One can see unforgettable things when doing that. I try to use that skill in other life situations, too. Sometimes I overshoot.

Painting. Things that were in the head are no longer just in the head. Amazing.

Poetry. I like: the deep, the almost sacred, the complex, the crudely simple, life-like, hauntingly sharp, elaborate and unexpected. Philip Larkin, T. S. Eliot, Peeter Sauter, Viivi Luik, Sarah Duncan.
I make: the gooey.

Musik, Filme und Bücher

I like dream pop, indie rock, ambient. Also slowcore and some dark wave artists. Some rap. Trip hop, folktronica.

The Million Dollar Hotel, Tangerines, The Guardian, Paterson, Micmacs, The End of the Tour, In Bruges, Subway, Leon the Professional.

I've enjoyed David Foster Wallace's "Brief Interviews with Hideous Men", N. K. Jemisin's "The Broken Earth" trilogy, Viivi Luik's "Varjuteater" (profound experience), Emil Tode's "Piiririik", Jaan Kross' works (endlessly delightful, humorous, nuanced, serious, political). These days I'm mostly reading continental philosophy books and articles on aesthetics and phenomenology, some authors who could be seen as classics in culture studies as well, since all that stuff relates to my PhD project: Gadamer, Ricoeur, Bakhtin, Benjamin.

Eine tolle Erfahrung, die ich gemacht habe

Interacting with animals, having them trust me.

Lehren, lernen, teilen

I can teach some Estonian, 101 of (nature) photography, and if I try to remember really hard, I can perhaps also pull up some (very basic) tap dance moves from the pits of my memory.

Was ich mit Gastgebern teilen kann

Again, Estonian language, and my knowledge about things that I know anything about. I can cook too, kind of.
