One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

We carried 600 kilos (1300 lbs) of books into Ethiopia. The books had been requested by the directors of four schools.

One school was in a town called Nekempte into which we flew on a charter plane. Before landing our pilot, Solomon Gizaw, did a low flyover to make sure that there were no rocks or grazing animals on the "runway". As we flew past and then circled back to make the landing, we saw people flooding out of the round thatched houses below us.

Solomon told us the people were excited to see and hear the plane because it had been more than 2 years since one had landed on this dirt and grass airstrip. In fact, the grass had to be cut (by hand) in preparation for our arrival. There were also soldiers with guns who - we were told - were there to keep order and shoot any animals that might run out in front of the plane upon landing or takeoff.

It was an incredible experience. The people were generous and kind and we felt like we were living something from the pages of National Geographic.
