ABOUT ME

Hi, my name is Mi and I'm from California. I have lived in CA for most of my life and went to university in Santa Cruz where I graduated with a degree in Community Studies, which is similar to sociology but with a more grassroots perspective, with a particular interest in international food security. I work with various nonprofits and live with the ultimate goal of making the world a better place.

I'm nerdy, sincere, gentle, androgynous, and friendly. It's nice to meet you!

PHILOSOPHY

My personal philosophy is to think like a sponge, absorbing everything and squeezing out the extraneous fluff.

I am new to the site and am planning a bicycling trip to China. And hopefully meeting some great couchsurfers along the way!

I'm a writer, a reader, an animal lover, and overall a very curious person. I love situations where I have something to learn and when I travel I make it a point to do educational things, like visit museums and important monuments. I have worked in a few museums and find natural history fascinating. I collect rocks, hug trees, and ride my bike everywhere.

I love animals- I've been vegan for the past five years and delight in animals of any variety, even bugs! I also have a particular fondness for dinosaurs. I read constantly, particularly novels, pulitzer prize winners, and adventure travel books.

I listen to mostly classic rock, folk, and pop. Some of my favorites are: Simon and Garfunkel, Elvis, Fleetwood Mac, Yelle, The Mamas and The Papas, Phil Collins, The Decemberists, Lady Gaga, and Rilo Kiley.

I'm an avid reader. Some of my favorite authors are: TC Boyle, Michael Crichton, Truman Capote, Chuck Palahniuk, Virginia Woolf, Djuana Barnes, Agatha Christie, Herman Melville, Robert Louis Stevenson, Ray Bradbury, and Thoreau, just to name a few.

One of my favorite memories was going to Stonehenge when I was 13. I had been to England a lot when I was young because my mother is from there, but this particular trip has stayed in my memory as one of the most inspiring and moving experiences I've ever had. It was a drizzly day, which seemed to add to the mystical aura of this fabled location, and I spent hours walking around and around to study the stones from every angle. The energy there was profoundly serene yet powerful.

Another moment that left me awestruck was this past summer when I visited Norway and had my first opportunity to stand on a glacier. As an environmentalist, this was particularly moving for me. In addition to the immense majesty of the landscape, the reality of the uncertain fate of the world's glaciers was not far from my mind.

Redwood forests also leave me awestruck. Being around such large living things was humbling, not to mention gorgeous.

I believe that everyone has something valuable to share and everyone has something valuable to learn. I know how to shoot an arrow, edit a paper, ride a horse, and change a bike tire.

I would like to learn more about bicycle repair and basically anything else anyone wants to teach me.
