About Me

Hello couch-world! I am a mostly-human person, part-devotee, part-heretic regarding life generally. I'm currently getting a PhD in philosophy, which mostly means I get to talk to people about what they think. I used to make furniture, which was quiet.

I dig bicycles and strong winds and music that fills. I like to tinker with things, words and mechanical parts and pre-conceptions. I like to discover odd bits of geometry in situ and document them. I like unfamiliar places and ideas both good and bad. I mostly walk, though I have been known to canter when the time is right. I live by the kairos and the hope.

I love to cook and to share food, and I will gladly make a merry meal for kind folks. I like company. I also like solitude and the sea.

The world still strikes me as a wondrous place. Which is to say, I still believe there are dragons out there.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I like the idea of people sharing what they have, be it a spare couch or a spare word, suggestions for swimming holes or watering holes, advice on where to have the best picnic, or where to see something that will make me think , etc. etc.

Mostly I think hospitality is one of those things there should be more of in the world.

Music, Movies, and Books

I like music, on tape or in person. Right now I listen mostly to quiet stuff, folksy or droney or rag-tag or classical. Sound goes in and out.

Books...these matter, I think. I hope to read Fernando Pessoa in the near future, and I often find myself wishing Bolaño had written another book, and there's an essay on walking by Anne Carson that I've been trying to finish for some years now but it just won't happen. I wish I were cooler because then I could have a tattoo of the deathly hallows on my wrist.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I've gotten lost even when I know exactly where I am.

Teach, Learn, Share

All good things. Maybe all the same thing.

I can cook for you! And quite happily at that. A meal, or two. I'll probably buy you a beer as well. And I'll tell you stories (if I can remember any).
