About Me

CURRENT MISSION

After roaming around the country for the last 15 years I have finally found a place where I am really excited about living, and that is Terlingua. I have had a long list of towns, but this is where I kept coming back to so I have bought some land and am now trying to figure out the best was to move forward to live on my land.

ABOUT ME

After 12 years of working in a miserable career as a software engineer, I quit in May of 2008. I spent 2.5 years floundering around, exploring all sorts of different options in work and living.

The first thing I did after bailing on my career was to go visit Dancing Rabbit Eco-Village. This place changed my life. I discovered not only the premier example of sustainable living, but also an amazing community. Dancing Rabbit is a beautiful example of living an earth neutral life on the cutting edge of sustainable technology. Living sustainable doesn't necessarily mean compromise or living in the dark ages. Although I find myself back there more and more often and am always amazed with the changes. Ask me about it, I'll go on for hours if you let me.

In 2010, I came up with a plan when I learned about a career as a Rope Access Technician. I decided to do a NOLS Mountaineering course for Outdoor Educators, and then get certified as a Rope Access Tech. I also did a Wilderness First Responder, which was all piled on a somewhat useless certification in Photovoltaic Installation. I figured any one of these alone is somewhere useless, but all together represented a valuable package to get into one of a variety of careers, Renewable Energy, wandering around in the wilderness as an outdoor educator, or hanging from rope off a variety of tall structures.

My plan panned out, I got an awesome job as a Rope Access Technician hanging off of wind turbines all across the country. I have now been climbing turbines since 2010 largely living in hotels all over the country along with stint in British Columbia and New Hampshire for my off times.

I am about ready to walk away from this job and commit fully to life in Terlingua. The money won't be near as good but I will no longer have to travel and can be fully immersed in this amazing community and area of Texas. It can be hard living out in one of the most remote places in the lower 48 states of the US.

PHILOSOPHY

It will all work itself out in the end.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

In all ways that I can, use to host a lot when I had a house, I can also now probably host in more of a camping situation or potentially at some of my friends places.

I try to recruit all my friends, surprisingly many are apprehensive about participating.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Surfing and hosting all I can. Have surfed cross country, and also semi-locally doing overnight bicycle rides. Hosted a wide range of people for many different walks of life.

Interests

Homesteading, bicycling, renewable energy, sustainable living, exploring and camping on our public lands, Dancing Rabbit, intentional community, alternative economies, hiking, canoeing, camping, Vipassana meditation, gardening(although I think I have a thumb of doom), nature.
