About Me

Hey, I am Michaela.
I am PhD candidate in Sociology in Brno Czech Republic but will soon move to Rome, Italy to study there for a year. Meanwhile during the summer 2016 I would like to travel Europe a bit.

In the past I worked with migrants in Czech Republic, volunteered as debate couch and judge in Slovakia, later as tutor for Roma kids in Brno, worked at university, organised protest against neonacis in cities where I lived, worked on research (latest one about minority kids in foster care and I am still pretty excited about this one), taught at university, worked in bars and cafes, lived in the USA, Germany and Hong Kong.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I used to use AirBnB and different CS groups on FB and now I am here, because getting in touch with locals is inevitable part of travelling for me and I believe it helps to build deeper understanding among people from different cultures.

Interests

Sociology, human rights and visual art. Of course travelling, but I believe that is something we all have in common. I love food and would love to cook you something - I am quite good cook of different European cuisines. I love travelling because I love to talk with people and watch how and where they live. I am always curious about architecture.

Music, Movies, and Books

I listen to music a lot and I prefer to do it at the summer music festivals. My most favourite are http://en.msdockville.de/, http://www.pohodafestival.sk/en/ and http://www.colours.cz/. I listen to almost everything and currently I am really into the HVOB, Fallgrapp, Savages and .
I don’t really have favourite movie even though I go to cinema quite often if there is chance. Lately I liked Ida, polish movie. But books are something else. I can read few at the same time. I just finished Naomi Klien "This changes everything" and "Smart Cities" by Townsend and now I am reading Sorokin's book Telurie.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Lately I came back from Hong Kong, where I have lived for a semester and studied at two unis at the same time and still managed to travel Cambodia, Thailand and China and felt in love with the region.
In the past I trained young debaters in Slovakia when they went to world’s competition to Istanbul and helped established debate league for elementary schools. Do not know what the academic debate is? One more topic we can talk about ;)

Teach, Learn, Share

I can teach debate and share funny stories from my high school debate "carrier". I'm good with kids and can tutor basic maths (if you happen to have some kids or math problems). Currently I am starting with my friedn and fellowstudent blog that will factcheck Czech newspapers articles using big data, because I focus on quantitative data analysis and I would like to learn about media and way how they work in other countries.

What I Can Share with Hosts

Food! And good laugh. And hope for humanity. Plus music tips as I write above I am fan of musicfestivals :)
