Sobre mí

CURRENT MISSION

Immerse myself in all that Spain has to offer by traveling throughout, meeting and staying with amazing people, discovering what it means to be a budding citizen of the world...

ABOUT ME

Currently in Cádiz, Spain for a language program. So far Cádiz and surrounding cities are wonderful. I do hope to get more in touch with nature soon though (while traveling and once I settle into Granada for the Fall). I miss the redwood forests of Central/Northern CA, but I look forward to discovering what natural splendor surrounds me in Spain.Quiero pasar tiempo en la naturaleza española.

I'd like to put myself in new cultural contexts to gain some perspective and start developing myself as a citizen of the world (I have a long way to go, haha). Por eso estoy en España. También para aprender español.

I am passionate about science and the environment. Estudio el medio ambiente, biología, ecología, y evolución.

I play flute & saxophone. Yo he llevado mi fluata a España, vamos a tocar música! Let's jam!

My boyfriend of almost 4 years is an amazing artist, musician, and intellectual. He's about to meet me in Spain (the country in which he was conceived haaaaaa) for two weeks. We're going to stay in Madrid,Granada, & Cordoba.

PHILOSOPHY

I'm always learning, growing, changing, & choosing, but I have some understanding of my core. Despite habits and patterns, me and the world around me are in a constant state of flux. At times this is overwhelming (and at times this is unnoticed) but I'm working to find balance & connections between going with the flow, creating change, and being rock steady.

I appreciate peacefulness. I yearn for a world of empathy and respect, and hope I contribute to that vision in some ways. I love connecting through conversing and listening.
Everybody should dance more!
I like to post this affirmation on my mirror: I am cautious and courageous!

Por qué estoy en Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I'm new to this beautiful CS Project, and I suppose I will be discovering what my niche in this community might be. I want to meet some REAL LIVE couch surfers and see what this is all about! I hope to participate via music, great conversation, good vibes, and learning from and with those around me.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I've done a mild amount of couch surfing, and not through CS Project. Mostly with friends or my friends' friends. I've hosted a couple non-CS surfers for moderate amounts of time. I enjoyed the constant musical serenade of one in particular (but not the dirty dishes, haha).

Intereses

I enjoy a sexy fusion of genetics, ecology, botany, coevolution, and spatial modeling in GIS. That said, I have to work really hard to do well in these and other subjects because I feel I am not great at retaining information easily. This makes me think I might have to be a student forever :D

Musical theatre (singing, dancing, acting) and Performing and Fine Arts in general. I used to perform a lot, now I mostly enjoy seeing installations and performances and participating where I can.

Burning Man! Being a hard-working and interested student.
Shedding fear and enjoying new experiences.
I really should and would like to read more books.
I am humbled, intimidated, and excited by how much there is to know.

FOOD. Indian, Thai, Mexican, Mediterranean... mmmm always down to try new things, especially home-cooked.

Música, películas y libros

Every genre has its perfect context and I can appreciate most all of it.
MAKE it FUNKY! Now clap yo' hands to the beat, to the beat. Jazz it up. It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing. Favorite genres include funk, jazz, soul, blues, hip hop, and reggae.
Used to listen to 80s hair metal, and I occasionally revisit that guilty pleasure. Classical, afro, world, rock, folk, indie, dance... whatever seems appropriate at the time.

Movies/shows are great, but I don't seek them out often. Happy to share in the viewing experience with others though. The new Star Trek I liked a lot (plus my cousin wrote the screenplay). Just watched all of Battle Star Galactica, haha. Community is a funny show. Rocky Horror. Singing in the Rain.

Reading an excellent sci-fi adventure book, Perdido Street Station by China Mieville. So good!! Recently read His Dark Materials series... really amazing. My favorite fantasy adventure series of all time (except maybe LOTR) is Garth Nix's series of Lirael, Sabriel, & Abhorsen. Love my badass heroin characters!
I've done a lot of reading for school e.g. the classic Silent Spring by Rachel Carson, Blood and Oil, the Political Mind, things of that nature that involve environment, and how f****d up capitalism and covert U.S. involvement around the world is.
Have not read one in a while but I like distopia.

Algo increíble que he hecho

Played with the UCSC wind ensemble in Carnegie Hall in New York, New York. The acoustics are... perfect.

Enseña, aprende, comparte

I'd love to share voice & flute. I'm no music professional at all, but I've got enough going on to get by pretty well. If we team up, we could make tip money on the streets :)
Quiero aprender español.
I could use some sewing skills.
I just took a botany class so I can tell you what I remember about plant anatomy, physiology, evolutionary relationships, and what traits are characteristics of different plant families! I don't know a ton but I'm interested in world affairs involving petroleum in the Middle East.
I'll tell you all about how (domesticated) rats make the best pets, and if you dislike them I can probably soften you up by showing you pictures and telling you stories of my adorable rattie boy, Jackson (RIP).
