About Me

Just updated this for the first time since 2011. I'm now living in Wellington NZ, staying here long term but also travelling when I get the chance!

Previous profile:

CURRENT MISSION

Dodge winter by hopping hemispheres

ABOUT ME

In the last 5 years I've lived in Ireland, Australia and Canada, and tried not to spend long enough anywhere that I'd get bored. Most recently I've been back in Cork working as a bar/production manager at a pub and live music venue, and now I'm fed up with that again so heading off to New Zealand shortly.
I love socialising but at the same time I'm happy traveling alone and I enjoy my 'me time'

PHILOSOPHY

Ne te quaesiveris extra - do not seek outside yourself. Be self reliant but not selfish.

Memento mori - remember you will die. (So you'd better make the most of it now!)

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Haven't done so yet, have good intentions though. I have helped friends entertain several couchsurfers here in Cork in the last year.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

None yet, just met some sound people couchsurfing with friends

Interests

Music, especially live music, of almost any and every kind.
I like pubs; especially pubs where people go to have craic and banter, not bars where people go to pose.
I like reading and conversation about life and the world. History, philosophy, sociology and all branches of science.
I enjoy most sports as a spectator, and I like to go running, cycling and swimming, and to kick a ball around with friends.
At home in Cork I occasionally go rowing but in traditional boats so more for leisure than for sport.

Music, Movies, and Books

Movies - Die Hard 3! Thrillers, suspense, comedy, mind-fucks like 12 Monkeys

Music - wide and varied tastes from Duke Ellington to Fela Kuti to Super Furry Animals to Mstrkrft

Books - I read a lot of newspapers, journals and non-fiction, and am very interested in current affairs, science, philosophy, history etc. I am currently reading The Master and his Emissary by Iain McGilchrist which is hugely fascinating and thought-provoking. Also I am reading an account of Terence MacSwiney's hunger strike by Dave Hannigan, and Aldous Huxley's Doors of Perception. In fiction I'm also reading Huxley, Bukowski, Heller, Vonnegut... mostly recommendations from friends.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

This is lame, I've nothing decent to put here.

Teach, Learn, Share

Random useless facts would have to figure highly here. You'd be amazed what crap can accumulate from wasted hours reading papers and wikipedia. In terms of tangible and useful stuff... well I can give advice but am by no means an expert on subjects like Irish culture & history, travel, technology, photography, music....
