Overview
About Me
I’m single, live alone atm, have 2 sons in their 20s that don’t live at home, and am a doctor. I am pretty sociable, interested in people, enjoy good conversation over food and wine. I have lived in Melbourne for most of my life and know the city well, and lots about Melbourne, Victoria and Australia. There are so many restaurants and night places near home. Richmond is close with some great music venues .
My house in South Yarra has a solar heated pool, great views across to the city in one direction, and over an island in the Yarra river looking the other way.
I love getting out of town, often to the beach at my holiday place on the surfcoast at Anglesea, and also have a longstanding love of bushwalking.
Re my work, my specialty is Infectious Diseases, and, with that interest, I travel quite a lot internationally. I have an interest in research as well as looking after patients.
I have lived for short periods overseas in the USA with my work- at CDC, and in Rabaul in Papua New Guinea. .
I love travel, and am a keen hiker, recently in the Dolomites in Italy and Cornwall, and the west highland way in Scotland , I’m gay friendly.
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
I love company when I’m travelling, and always really appreciate when locals show me around or tell me interesting places to go. So I will enjoy meeting you [ hopefully] and helping you, if you stay with me, to make the most of your visit to Melbourne and this part of Australia . I have really appreciated meeting the locals when I travel, and their suggestions about what I should do on their home territory.
I hope I can be as much help for you.

Music, Movies, and Books
I like lots of current music, jazz especially blues. I love movies, and there is an excellent cinema near my home with lots of international movies. I have read 3 books in the last month, more than usual for me, but satisfying.
Music: Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Lou Reed, the National, Radiohead, The Police, Cream, Moody Blues, Doors, Led Zeppelin, Canned Heat, Simon and Garfunkel, David Bowie, U2, Stevie Wonder, Beatles and Rolling Stones
Movies: Deerhunter, the Square, Leviathen, One flew over the Cuckoos Nest, Apocolypse now, Inglorious Basterds, Whiplash
Books: Artist in a Floating World and anything by Ishigura, Dirt Music, Sapiens, Ilywacker, Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, One Hundred Years of Solitude, most books from Richard Ford, Tim Winton, or Peter Carey, Narziss and Goldmund.
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
I know that it’s not amazingly difficult, but I walked the Inca trail, and have hiked a lot in Torres del Paine in Chile, North America including the Smoky Mountains section of the Appalachian Trail, and many of the famous national parks in New Zealand , and of course Australia, especially Tasmania and Victoria. Probably the most unusual, experiences I have had was attending traditional fire dances when locals dance through fires carrying pythons while working in PNG
What I Can Share with Hosts
Well I have a great modern house, with pretty spectacular views, close to the centre of Melbourne, in a very convenient location in South Yarra, good access to public transport, close to restaurants, shopping, not far from the sporting precinct, pool in summer.
I also have a holiday shack down the surf coast at Anglesea, with a great outlook, big deck, and pool table
