About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Putting one foot in front of the other

ABOUT ME

I'm semi-nomadic. I lived in the same house from birth until I was 18. Since then I haven't stayed in the same place for longer than a year, often moving multiple times in a single year. I have no idea what motivates my nomadic lifestyle, other than a desire for new challenges.
I miss the friends I've made in all the various places I've lived and I'm always thinking of ways to return to those places, while also dreaming of the next new place I will go. I suppose its great to have options.
I currently work for a youth volunteer program called Katimavik. I have held several different roles with Katimavik and I've loved each of them. I am proud of the work I've done helping young Canadians discover their country and overcoming incredible challenges. This will be I've been working with katimavik and living in the Prairies for the past two years. I'm starting to feel the need to move on to new challenges, but what that will be is anyone's guess.

PHILOSOPHY

The golden rule is a good rule.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I am brand new to CS. I'm hoping that I'll be a part of my local CS community and that I'll be able to meet other members when I travel. I'm currently not in a situation to host people myself, but I'm happy to meet people new to Calgary or just visiting and show them around.

Interests

I'm interested in sports, politics, and music. My favourite sports are basketball and baseball, which makes me unusual for a Canadian. My politics are more pragmatic than ideological. I like mostly punkrock, but also some folk and indie rock. I don't play any instruments myself, but I love to see live music of pretty much any kind.

Music, Movies, and Books

The only movie that I can watch over and over and over again is Shawshank Redemption - no particular reason, just is. I mostly read non-fiction history, politics and travelogues. I do enjoy Tom Robbins and John Irving when I read fiction.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

On a trip to Cambodia, my friend and I met waitress at a restaurant in Siem Reap who worked as a teacher during the day. She invited us to visit her school, so the following Monday we asked our driver to help us find the school. Our first stop was a market to pick up notebooks and pencils to hand out. When we pulled into the schoolyard the teacher was really surprised to see us and the kids were incredible. We taught a short English lesson and handed out the books and pencils. It was completely unplanned and something we did just cause we could. That's how I like my vacations.
